Chapter 6 - THE BLOODLINE

Margaret refused to answer for almost an hour.
Evelyn refused to let her leave.
Finally, Margaret spoke.
“Daniel isn't related to you.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“That wasn't my question.”
“I know.”
“Then answer it.”
Margaret wiped her eyes.
“Twenty-nine years ago, your father had an affair.”
Evelyn felt sick.
“With Daniel's mother?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel is Dad's son?”
“No.”
Evelyn frowned.
Margaret continued.
“Vanessa is.”
The room went silent.
Evelyn stared at her mother.
“Vanessa is my half sister?”
“Yes.”
Every confrontation suddenly looked different.
Vanessa's hatred.
Thomas's obsession with protecting her.
Daniel's strange loyalty to his sister.
Except Vanessa wasn't Daniel's biological sister.
She was Evelyn's.
“Does Vanessa know?”
“Yes.”
“Does Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Years.”
“And I was the only idiot who didn't?”
“You weren't an idiot.”
“Stop protecting me with lies.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
Evelyn picked up Daniel's flash drive.
“I want this opened.”
Marcus nodded.
“We'll use an isolated computer.”
The drive contained thousands of documents.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Audio files.
Video.
One folder was labeled EVELYN.
She opened it.
Inside were photographs of herself.
Hundreds.
At work.
At restaurants.
Driving.
Sleeping.
Evelyn recoiled.
“Someone was watching me.”
Marcus examined the metadata.
“These go back seven years.”
Before she met Daniel.
Another folder was labeled SUCCESSION.
Inside was a legal document.
Evelyn read the first page.
Her stomach turned.
Project Willow's controlling interest belonged to Thomas Carter.
Upon Thomas's death, control transferred to his biological children.
Plural.
Evelyn.
And Vanessa.
That was the motive.
If Thomas was legally dead, Evelyn and Vanessa controlled Willow.
But Evelyn had never known.
Vanessa had.
Daniel had.
And someone had spent four years moving billions through the network.
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“How much money?”
He calculated.
“Possibly over two billion dollars.”
Margaret whispered.
“My God.”
Evelyn kept reading.
Then she found a clause.
If either heir died without living descendants, control transferred entirely to the surviving heir.
Evelyn's hand instinctively covered her stomach.
Marcus saw it.
“So if you died before your baby was born…”
“Vanessa gets everything.”
The staircase was no longer an explosion of anger.
It had been a financial decision.
Evelyn felt cold.
“Vanessa didn't lose control.”
Marcus nodded.
“She had a motive.”
A massive one.
The next file was video.
Thomas appeared onscreen.
The date was two years earlier.
Vanessa sat opposite him.
“You promised Evelyn wouldn't be involved.”
Thomas replied calmly.
“She became involved when she married Daniel.”
“She doesn't know anything.”
“She will.”
“What do you want me to do?”
Thomas leaned forward.
“Make sure she never controls Willow.”
The video ended.
Evelyn stared at the black screen.
Her own father had ordered Vanessa to remove her.
But there was another file.
Recorded three weeks ago.
Daniel was speaking to Thomas.
“You touch my wife and I expose everything.”
Thomas laughed.
“You've been stealing from her.”
“I've been moving money where you can't reach it.”
“You expect Evelyn to believe that?”
“No.”
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“I expect her to hate me.”
“Then why protect her?”
Daniel looked directly toward the hidden camera.
“Because unlike you, I actually love your daughter.”
The video ended.
Evelyn couldn't speak.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Daniel may be telling part of the truth.”
“Part.”
“Yes.”
“And the rest?”
“We find out.”
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Whitmore?”
Evelyn looked up.
“You have a visitor.”
“No visitors.”
“She says it's urgent.”
“Who?”
The nurse hesitated.
“Vanessa Whitmore.”
Marcus stood immediately.
Officers entered with Vanessa between them.
Her hands were cuffed.
Her face was bruised.
Evelyn stared at her.
Vanessa stared back.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Vanessa looked at Evelyn's stomach.
“Is the baby alive?”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“No thanks to you.”
Vanessa looked away.
“Why are you here?”
“I made a deal.”
“With whom?”
“Reed.”
Marcus frowned.
“I made no deal.”
“Not you.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Your father.”
Marcus's face changed.
Vanessa turned toward Evelyn.
“I pushed you.”
Margaret gasped.
Vanessa continued.
“I won't lie about that.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought you were about to destroy everything.”
“So you tried to kill me?”
“I was angry.”
“You knew the inheritance clause.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn stared.
“Then it wasn't anger.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You think I wanted Willow?”
“Didn't you?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I wanted out.”
Vanessa stepped closer until an officer stopped her.
“Thomas wouldn't let me leave.”
“You mean Dad.”
“I mean Thomas.”
Vanessa's voice became bitter.
“He stopped being a father to either of us a long time ago.”
She looked toward Marcus.
“Tell her what happened to Robert Whitmore.”
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa laughed.
“You don't know?”
“Vanessa.”
“Daniel killed him.”
Evelyn froze.
“My husband killed his father?”
“Not biological father.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“But yes.”
“When?”
“Ten years ago.”
“The car accident?”
“No.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“The accident was staged.”
Evelyn remembered Daniel's words.
Did you kill anyone?
Not the person you think.
“Why?”
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Because Robert discovered Thomas was Vanessa's father.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
“And Robert tried to kill her.”
Vanessa's face broke.
“Daniel saved my life.”
Evelyn stared at her.
For the first time, Vanessa wasn't furious.
She was terrified.
“He's protected me ever since.”
“Then why did he marry me?”
Vanessa's expression changed.
“At first?”
She looked at the floor.
“Because Thomas told him to.”
Evelyn felt the words like another fall.
“And later?”
Vanessa looked up.
“Later, Daniel fell in love with you.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
“Convenient.”
“I hated you for it.”
“Enough to push me.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“But Evelyn…”
“What?”
“I wasn't the person who loosened the staircase rail.”
Evelyn went still.
“What rail?”
Vanessa stared at her.
“When I grabbed you, you reached for it.”
She swallowed.
“It broke away.”
Evelyn remembered.
The wood shifting beneath her fingers.
She had assumed the force of the fall broke it.
Vanessa shook her head.
“It had already been cut.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who did it?”
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
Then toward Evelyn.
“Someone who knew exactly where Evelyn would stand.”
A phone rang.
Margaret checked hers.
Her face went pale.
Evelyn noticed.
“Mom?”
Margaret rejected the call.
“Who was that?”
“No one.”
“Show me.”
“Evelyn.”
“Show me the phone.”
Margaret refused.
Marcus took it.
The caller ID contained no name.
Just a number.
But the lock-screen notification showed the message.
WHY DIDN'T SHE DIE?
Evelyn stared at her mother.
Margaret began shaking.
May you like
“Evelyn, I can explain.”
And for the first time since the staircase, Evelyn wondered whether the person who wanted her dead had been standing beside her hospital bed the entire night.
