Chapter 11 - ROSA

Her real name was Elena Vale.

Twenty-eight years earlier, Elena had worked for Willow.

Not as a maid.

As an accountant.

She had recorded every illegal transaction.

Every payoff.

Every hidden account.

When she tried to leave, Margaret threatened her family.

So Elena disappeared.

Years later, she returned under another name.

Rosa Martinez.

She entered the Whitmore household as a maid.

And waited.

“For what?”

Evelyn asked.

“For someone like you.”

“Why me?”

“Because you still had a conscience.”

Rosa opened a hidden compartment beneath the library floor.

Inside was a sealed metal case.

She unlocked it with the brass key.

The key she had given Evelyn.

Inside was the original Willow charter.

And the real ledger.

Evelyn stared.

“You had it all along.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you give it to police?”

“Because I didn't know which police belonged to Margaret.”

Marcus looked offended.

Rosa smiled.

“You included.”

“Fair.”

Daniel was freed.

He approached Evelyn.

She stepped away.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

“I deserve that.”

“You endangered our baby.”

“I know.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You married me because my father ordered you to.”

“At first.”

“Stop saying at first like it erases anything.”

“It doesn't.”

Evelyn looked at the charter.

“What happens now?”

Marcus answered.

“We build a case.”

“Against my mother?”

“Against everyone.”

“Including Daniel?”

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Good.”

Evelyn stared.

“You're willing to go to prison?”

“If that's where this ends.”

“It doesn't end there.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

She touched the wedding ring on her finger.

Then removed it.

She placed it on the table.

Daniel stared at it.

“I can't do this anymore.”

His face broke.

“I know.”

“I loved you.”

“I love you.”

“That's what makes this worse.”

Evelyn walked away.

But Willow wasn't finished.

The original ledger contained hundreds of names.

Judges.

Executives.

Police officers.

Politicians.

One name shocked Marcus.

His own superior.

Police Commissioner Henry Walsh.

Marcus stared.

“That's impossible.”

Rosa shook her head.

“No.”

“He recruited me.”

“Exactly.”

Marcus realized the investigation had been compromised from the beginning.

Then every police radio in the mansion went silent.

Marcus looked toward the windows.

Police vehicles began moving away.

“What the hell?”

His phone rang.

Commissioner Walsh.

Marcus answered.

“Sir?”

“You are relieved of duty.”

Marcus froze.

“On what grounds?”

“Misconduct.”

“Sir—”

“Turn over all evidence.”

Marcus looked at the ledger.

“No.”

Walsh became quiet.

“That wasn't a request.”

Marcus ended the call.

“We have to move.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Where?”

“Somewhere outside city jurisdiction.”

Thomas, still cuffed, smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Marcus glared.

“Don't enjoy this.”

“I warned you.”

Gunfire suddenly erupted outside.

The windows shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Daniel covered Evelyn.

Marcus fired toward the garden.

Rosa grabbed the metal case.

A vehicle crashed through the front gates.

Masked men poured out.

Not police.

Not criminals working quietly anymore.

This was an assault.

“Basement!”

Marcus shouted.

They ran.

Evelyn stopped.

“Hope!”

Her baby was still inside the police command vehicle.

Daniel grabbed her.

“No!”

“My daughter!”

“I'll get her!”

He ran toward the front.

Bullets ripped through the doorway.

“DANIEL!”

Evelyn screamed.

He disappeared into the smoke.

Seconds later, an explosion shook the mansion.

Evelyn was thrown against the wall.

The front windows shattered.

Fire erupted outside.

The police command vehicle was burning.

Evelyn screamed Hope's name.

Then through the smoke, a figure appeared.

Daniel.

His jacket was burning.

Blood covered his face.

But Hope was protected beneath his body.

He handed the baby to Evelyn.

“Take her.”

Evelyn grabbed Hope.

Daniel collapsed.

“Daniel!”

His eyes closed.

Marcus checked him.

“He's been shot.”

“Where?”

“Chest.”

Evelyn's world narrowed.

Daniel opened his eyes for one second.

“Is Hope okay?”

“Yes.”

He smiled weakly.

“Good.”

Then his eyes closed again.

“Daniel?”

No response.

“DANIEL!”

Marcus dragged them toward the basement.

They escaped through the wine tunnel as the mansion burned behind them.

Evelyn held Hope.

Rosa carried the ledger.

Thomas stumbled beside Marcus.

And Daniel was carried between two officers.

Nobody knew whether he was alive.

Then Marcus's phone received a message.

Commissioner Walsh.

A photograph.

Margaret Carter sitting inside a black SUV.

No handcuffs.

No police escort.

Free.

Underneath were four words.

YOU CHOSE THE WRONG SIDE.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

May you like

Her mother had escaped.

And now she had the entire corrupted side of Willow protecting her.
