Chapter 1 - THE FALL

The first thing Evelyn Carter heard after hitting the marble floor was someone whispering that she deserved it.

She couldn't tell who said it.

Pain exploded through her back.

Her lungs refused to work.

For one terrifying second, she couldn't feel anything below her waist.

Then her baby moved.

A tiny flutter.

Weak.

But there.

Evelyn pressed both hands against her stomach.

“Please.”

Her voice barely came out.

“Stay with me, baby.”

Someone screamed for an ambulance.

Someone else shouted for towels.

Guests surrounded the bottom of the staircase, but nobody seemed brave enough to touch her.

Above them, Vanessa Whitmore stood on the balcony in her emerald evening gown.

Her face was red with fury.

“You ruined my life!”

Vanessa pointed directly at Evelyn.

“You walked into this family and destroyed everything!”

The accusation was almost laughable.

Almost.

Except Evelyn was lying on the floor at thirty-two weeks pregnant.

And Vanessa had been standing directly behind her when she fell.

“Make her apologize!”

Vanessa screamed.

A housemaid named Rosa grabbed Vanessa's arm.

“Ms. Whitmore, please stop.”

Vanessa ripped herself free.

“Don't touch me!”

Rosa stumbled backward.

Evelyn saw everything through blurred vision.

She saw Vanessa's anger.

She saw Rosa's fear.

And she saw something far more important.

Vanessa was looking at Evelyn's phone.

Not at Evelyn.

At the phone.

That told Evelyn everything she needed to know.

She reached into the hidden pocket sewn into her dress.

Her fingers closed around the device.

Vanessa froze.

“What is she doing?”

Evelyn unlocked the screen.

One number was already waiting.

She pressed CALL.

Detective Marcus Reed answered immediately.

“Evelyn?”

She struggled to breathe.

“Detective.”

“Are you safe?”

“No.”

His voice changed.

“What happened?”

Evelyn looked directly at Vanessa.

“It already happened.”

Silence.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Exactly what we discussed?”

“Yes.”

“Are you injured?”

“I fell down the staircase.”

Marcus swore quietly.

“I'm sending medical units.”

“Send everyone.”

“Evelyn—”

“Everyone, Marcus.”

She watched Vanessa take a step backward.

“Police.”

Another step.

“Your financial-crimes team.”

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“And bring the evidence.”

Marcus didn't hesitate.

“Stay conscious.”

“I'll try.”

The call ended.

Vanessa suddenly pushed through the guests upstairs.

“Where are you going?”

Rosa asked.

Vanessa ignored her.

She disappeared into the west corridor.

Evelyn tried to raise herself.

Pain shot through her abdomen.

A middle-aged man in a tuxedo knelt beside her.

“Don't move.”

“She's leaving.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

“Forget Vanessa.”

“I can't.”

The man frowned.

Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.

“Don't let anyone leave this house.”

The stranger stared at her.

“What?”

“Please.”

A contraction ripped through Evelyn's body.

She cried out.

Then another voice thundered across the foyer.

“What happened?”

Evelyn knew that voice.

Her husband.

Daniel Whitmore pushed through the front doors.

His black tuxedo jacket was wet from the storm outside.

He stopped when he saw Evelyn on the floor.

For half a second, horror crossed his face.

Then something colder replaced it.

Calculation.

Evelyn noticed.

She had learned to notice everything.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Evelyn!”

He dropped beside her.

“Who did this?”

She stared at him.

“You don't know?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Where were you?”

“At the office.”

“At eleven at night?”

Daniel hesitated.

Only slightly.

“Emergency meeting.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

He was still lying.

Even now.

“Your sister pushed me.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

Evelyn couldn't believe what she was hearing.

“I just fell down your staircase.”

“I know.”

“Your sister was behind me.”

“Evelyn, you're hurt.”

“And?”

“You might be confused.”

There it was.

The first move.

Make her doubt herself.

Daniel had done it for months.

A missing document became something Evelyn had misplaced.

A threatening message became a joke she had misunderstood.

A strange bank transfer became an accounting error.

A warning from Vanessa became sisterly concern.

And now attempted murder was confusion.

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

“I'm not confused.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Think carefully before you accuse my sister.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Think carefully before you defend her.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Daniel looked toward the doors.

His face changed.

“You called the police?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“Because I was pushed down a staircase.”

“You should have called an ambulance.”

“I called both.”

Daniel stood.

“What exactly did you tell them?”

That question mattered more to him than whether his wife and unborn child were alive.

Evelyn knew it.

Daniel knew she knew it.

Before either could speak again, the mansion doors opened.

Paramedics entered first.

Police followed.

Then Detective Marcus Reed walked inside.

He wasn't alone.

Two uniformed officers came behind him.

So did a woman carrying a hard evidence case.

Daniel stared.

“Detective Reed?”

Marcus stopped.

“You know me?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I know who you are.”

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Then you probably know why I'm here.”

Paramedics surrounded her.

One checked her pulse.

Another placed equipment against her stomach.

“Fetal heartbeat.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Is my baby okay?”

“We have a heartbeat.”

“That's not what I asked.”

“We need to get you to the hospital.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I'm her husband.”

The paramedic nodded.

“You can follow us.”

“No.”

Everyone looked at Evelyn.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

“You're not coming with me.”

“Evelyn.”

“I said no.”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“You're in shock.”

Marcus stepped between them.

“She made herself clear.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“This is a family matter.”

Marcus gave him a cold look.

“A pregnant woman just fell down a staircase under suspicious circumstances.”

He glanced toward the officers.

“This stopped being a family matter the second she hit the floor.”

The paramedics lifted Evelyn onto a stretcher.

As they wheeled her toward the door, she grabbed Marcus's wrist.

“The study.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“What about it?”

“Behind Daniel's desk.”

Daniel's face changed.

Evelyn saw it.

Marcus saw it too.

“There's a panel.”

Daniel moved forward.

“My wife is heavily medicated.”

“I haven't given her anything yet,” the paramedic said.

Silence.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then back at Evelyn.

“What panel?”

“Press the brass rose.”

Daniel's voice sharpened.

“Evelyn.”

She ignored him.

“It opens a compartment.”

Marcus nodded.

“What will I find?”

Evelyn looked directly at her husband.

“The reason they wanted me gone before midnight.”

Daniel went completely still.

The paramedics rolled her outside.

Rain hit Evelyn's face.

As the ambulance doors opened, Rosa came running from the mansion.

“Mrs. Whitmore!”

An officer tried to stop her.

Rosa pushed something into Evelyn's hand.

A tiny brass key.

Evelyn stared at it.

Rosa leaned close.

“She knows.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

Rosa's eyes filled with terror.

“She knows you found the second ledger.”

Evelyn's blood turned cold.

“What second ledger?”

Rosa looked confused.

“The one your husband hid.”

Evelyn's heart stopped.

She had discovered one ledger.

Not two.

Rosa suddenly looked toward the mansion.

Her face went white.

A figure stood behind an upstairs window.

Watching them.

Rosa whispered one final sentence.

“Mrs. Whitmore, whatever Detective Reed finds tonight…”

She squeezed Evelyn's hand.

“…it's only half of what your husband has done.”

May you like

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

And Evelyn realized the conspiracy she had spent three months uncovering was much bigger than she had imagined.
