Chapter 2 - THE MAN IN THE GARAGE

Rebecca read the sentence twice.

Then she looked at her mother.

“What does Dad mean?”

Claire couldn’t answer.

Her mind was still trapped on Daniel’s face.

The man she had kissed that morning.

The man who had held Ethan after the delivery and cried.

The man who had promised Rebecca he would be back before midnight.

He was standing underneath the building with six strangers during a snowstorm.

And he knew something about Rebecca.

Claire grabbed her phone.

She called him.

Daniel answered on the second ring.

His voice was calm.

“Claire?”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

“On Route Seven.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

Silence.

Claire turned the phone toward the security monitor.

“I can see you.”

Daniel looked upward on the garage feed.

His expression changed.

“Claire, listen carefully.”

“No.”

“You need to get Rebecca away from the windows.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand what’s happening.”

Claire laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“I understand that a fake nurse just tried to take our newborn son.”

“That woman isn’t working for me.”

“Then why are you downstairs?”

Daniel looked behind him.

Someone approached him on the garage feed.

A tall man in a dark coat.

Daniel stepped away.

“Claire, there are things I should have told you.”

“Eight years ago?”

He said nothing.

Rebecca watched her mother.

Claire lowered her voice.

“Is Rebecca my daughter?”

Rebecca flinched.

Daniel closed his eyes.

That hesitation answered more than words could have.

Claire’s fingers began trembling.

“Daniel.”

“She is your daughter.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“She is yours in every way that matters.”

Rebecca stepped backward.

Claire felt her heart crack.

“What happened the night she was born?”

“Not over the phone.”

“You have ten seconds before I send this entire recording to the police.”

“Claire, if you do that, Ethan may not leave the building alive.”

Claire went still.

Daniel immediately realized his mistake.

“What did you say?”

“I didn’t mean—”

“You said Ethan.”

Another figure appeared behind Daniel.

The fake nurse.

She had reached the garage.

Claire stared at the screen.

“You know her.”

“No.”

“She’s standing beside you.”

Daniel turned.

His face hardened.

He shouted something at the woman.

The fake nurse ran toward one of the SUVs.

The tall man grabbed her.

Claire heard Laura pounding on the service door.

“Don’t trust him!”

Claire wheeled closer.

“What does Ethan have to do with what happened eight years ago?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Everything.”

The line disconnected.

Rebecca started crying silently.

Claire pulled her close.

“Look at me.”

Rebecca tried.

“You are my daughter.”

“But Dad said—”

“I don’t care what happened in some hospital room.”

Claire held her face.

“You are my daughter.”

Rebecca nodded.

But fear remained in her eyes.

Laura spoke through the glass.

“There’s a manual release beside the fire cabinet.”

Rebecca ran toward it.

Claire stopped her.

“Wait.”

She studied Laura.

“You came here to steal Ethan.”

Laura recoiled.

“No.”

“You arrived during a blizzard with a duplicate bracelet.”

“I came because I knew they would come.”

“Who?”

“The Bennett family.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

Laura continued.

“Eight years ago, Daniel’s father paid a nurse to switch two newborn girls.”

Rebecca stared.

Claire felt something inside her collapse.

“Why?”

Laura’s eyes filled.

“Because one of those babies was dying.”

Claire whispered.

“Which one?”

Laura looked at Rebecca.

“Yours.”

The corridor became silent.

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“Your biological daughter had a severe congenital heart defect.”

Laura pressed her palm against the glass.

“My daughter was healthy.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Claire could barely speak.

“They gave me your baby?”

Laura nodded.

“And gave your baby to me.”

“What happened to her?”

Laura’s face broke.

“They told me she died six hours later.”

Claire shut her eyes.

Rebecca’s hand slipped into hers.

For eight years Claire had believed Rebecca was the child she had carried.

The child she had nearly died delivering.

Now a stranger was telling her that her biological daughter had died in another woman’s arms.

Claire opened her eyes.

“Where is Daniel’s father?”

“Dead.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Claire remembered the funeral.

Charles Bennett.

Powerful.

Private.

Respected.

A hospital founder praised for decades of charitable work.

Laura’s voice became harder.

“Before he died, he mailed me evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“Medical records.”

“Why?”

“Because someone was repeating what they did eight years ago.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

Laura raised the duplicate bracelet.

“This time they weren’t switching two babies.”

May you like

She leaned closer to the glass.

“They were erasing one.”
