Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

By noon, news vans surrounded the resort.
Someone had leaked footage of the fake nurse attempting to take Ethan.
Reporters were already asking questions about duplicate hospital bracelets.
Bennett Health shares began collapsing.
Daniel stood beside the window.
“You don’t have to decide today.”
Claire almost smiled.
“Yes, I do.”
“If you release everything immediately, thousands of employees could suffer.”
“That sounds like your mother.”
“It’s still true.”
Claire looked at him.
“So what do you want?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Give investigators everything privately.”
“Let the company stabilize.”
“Then release the information gradually.”
“And the trust?”
He did not answer.
Claire understood.
“If I don’t make it public, you inherit control.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I’m not asking for that.”
“But you’d accept it.”
Silence.
Claire nodded.
“There you are.”
“What?”
“The man who signed eight years ago.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Claire continued.
“You always find a respectable reason to choose the money.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“No?”
Claire pointed toward Rebecca.
“She was the price last time.”
“Now you want strangers to be the excuse.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Rebecca was awake.
She had heard everything.
“Dad.”
Daniel turned.
Rebecca’s voice was quiet.
“If Mom tells the truth, will people lose jobs?”
“Some might.”
“Will people get hurt if she doesn’t?”
Daniel had no answer.
Rebecca looked at Claire.
“Then tell it.”
Claire stared at her.
Rebecca shrugged.
“You always tell me lying gets worse when you keep doing it.”
Claire kissed her forehead.
Decision made.
At 2:00 p.m., Claire sat before cameras in the resort conference room.
Laura sat beside her.
Marcus joined them.
Natalie joined by federal video link.
Daniel refused to stand onstage.
Margaret was already in custody.
Claire began.
“My name is Claire Bennett.”
“Last night, someone attempted to remove my newborn son from this hospital.”
“But that crime began long before he was born.”
She told the truth.
Not every private detail.
But enough.
Illegal embryo transfers.
Newborn switching.
Unauthorized genetic research.
Falsified medical records.
Coercion.
Cover-ups.
She announced that Bennett Health’s controlling ownership would be transferred into an independent victim compensation trust.
She also announced that no member of the Bennett family would control it.
A reporter shouted.
“Does that include your husband?”
Claire looked into the camera.
“Yes.”
Daniel, watching from the back, closed his eyes.
Another reporter asked.
“Are you divorcing him?”
Claire paused.
“That is a private matter.”
But Rebecca knew.
Laura knew.
Daniel probably knew.
The marriage had ended eight years earlier.
Claire had simply learned about it today.
Then Agent Ruiz entered the room.
She whispered something to Claire.
Claire’s face changed.
“What?”
Ruiz handed her a DNA report.
Rebecca and Laura.
Biological relationship confirmed.
Sophie and Claire.
Biological relationship confirmed.
Claire stared at the page.
The truth was official.
Two mothers.
Two daughters.
Two families formed in the wrong rooms.
A reporter shouted.
“What happens to the girls now?”
Claire looked at Laura.
Laura looked at her.
Neither had discussed it.
Then Rebecca stood from the front row.
Claire’s heart jumped.
Rebecca walked to the microphone.
“You keep asking who gets us.”
The reporters fell silent.
Rebecca took Sophie’s hand.
“We’re not luggage.”
Sophie stood beside her.
Rebecca continued.
“My mom is Claire.”
“Sophie’s mom is Laura.”
“Laura is also the woman who gave birth to me.”
“And Claire gave birth to Sophie.”
She looked at Sophie.
“So I guess we have a weird family.”
A few reporters smiled.
Rebecca did not.
“But nobody is switching us again.”
Sophie squeezed her hand.
Claire covered her mouth.
Laura cried openly.
The room erupted with questions.
But one question had already been answered.

The girls were staying where love had raised them.
And making room for the truth.
