THE WOMAN IN THE NURSE’S UNIFORM CAME FOR HER NEWBORN DURING THE BLACKOUT.

THE WOMAN IN THE NURSE’S UNIFORM CAME FOR HER NEWBORN DURING THE BLACKOUT.

THEN CLAIRE SAW THE BRACELET IN HER HAND—AND REALIZED SOMEONE HAD BEEN LYING TO HER FOR EIGHT YEARS.

“Mom, hide! She’s coming!”

Eight-year-old Rebecca burst into the treatment room, slammed the door shut, and locked it behind her.

Then she grabbed her mother’s wheelchair and pushed Claire behind a sliding wooden wall.

Outside, a brutal snowstorm had knocked out power to the isolated maternity resort.

Only the red emergency lights still glowed.

Baby Ethan slept beside them in his bassinet.

Then the doorknob moved.

Slowly.

A woman in a cream-colored medical uniform stepped inside using a stolen key card.

She didn’t check the room.

She didn’t call Claire’s name.

She didn’t even look around.

She walked straight toward the newborn.

“It’s him.”

Claire’s fingers tightened around the arms of her wheelchair.

The woman unlocked Ethan’s bassinet.

Then she pulled out her phone.

“Take the baby first.”

She glanced toward the rear service entrance.

“Hurry.”

Claire immediately hit the emergency alarm.

Heavy fireproof doors slammed shut at both ends of the corridor.

The bassinet wheels locked automatically.

Security cameras switched into emergency livestream mode.

Rebecca yanked open the hidden wall.

Claire rolled forward with her phone raised and recording.

“You are not a nurse.”

The woman froze.

For the first time, fear crossed her face.

Then came three slow knocks from the locked service door.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

A hooded figure stood behind the glass.

In one hand was a hospital bracelet.

Claire leaned forward.

The name printed across it made her blood run cold.

ETHAN BENNETT.

Claire looked down at the bracelet around her newborn son’s wrist.

Same name.

Same medical number.

Same time of birth.

Rebecca stared between them.

“Mom…”

Her voice trembled.

“Why are there two?”

The fake nurse slowly backed away.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

The hooded stranger reached up and removed her hood.

Rebecca suddenly grabbed Claire’s sleeve.

“That’s her.”

Claire looked at her daughter.

“What?”

Rebecca pointed toward the woman behind the glass.

“That’s the woman from the photograph in Dad’s locked drawer.”

Silence filled the corridor.

The stranger lifted the duplicate bracelet.

“Eight years ago, this hospital gave me the wrong baby.”

Her eyes slowly shifted toward Rebecca.

“And your husband knew.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Then every light in the maternity wing went black.

Ethan’s monitor immediately screamed an urgent alarm.

Claire reached toward the bassinet.

And from somewhere behind the glass, a voice whispered through the darkness.

“The baby inside that bassinet…”

A pause.

“…is not Ethan Bennett.”
