Chapter 14 - EVERYTHING EXPOSED

Victor lunged.
Maya moved backward.
The courthouse doors exploded open.
Federal agents flooded the hallway.
Victor grabbed Maya.
Again.
But this time she was ready.
She twisted away exactly as Cole had taught her hours earlier.
Victor lost his grip.
Cole came through the doorway.
“Victor Hale!”
Victor ran.
He raced through the courtroom.
Up the stairs.
Toward the judge’s chambers.
Maya followed despite Cole shouting at her to stop.
Victor reached a rear hallway.
Locked.
He turned.
Maya stood twenty feet away.
For the first time, Victor had nowhere left to go.
“You ruined everything.”
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
“My mother did.”
Agents surrounded him.
Victor laughed.
“You think arresting me ends this?”
“No.”
“There are people you’ll never find.”
“We already found them.”
His smile disappeared.
Maya held up her phone.
While Victor had been talking, the evidence had been transmitted.
His confession.
The ledger.
The file numbers.
Everything.
By sunrise, warrants were executed in six states.
Daniel Reeves accepted a cooperation agreement in exchange for identifying Northbridge operatives.
Three judges resigned before being arrested.
Officers were suspended.
Accounts were frozen.
Families whose records had been manipulated were contacted.
Children whose identities had been altered were finally given answers.
Northbridge collapsed.
Not in one dramatic explosion.
Piece by piece.
Name by name.
File by file.
Ethan gave a full confession.
He admitted everything he had done for Victor.
He did not ask for immunity.
Maya visited him before his sentencing.
“You could have negotiated.”
“I did.”
“For what?”
“Protection for you and the girls.”
She stared at him.
“You still don’t understand.”
He smiled sadly.
“I think I finally do.”
“You don’t get to save me anymore.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I testified because it was right.”
Maya nodded.
“That’s better.”
He received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation.
Not freedom.
Consequences.
Maya believed that mattered.
Her father also testified publicly.
He admitted signing the original contract.
He resigned from his company.
Then he created a fund for families harmed by Northbridge.
For once, he did not hide behind reputation.
And Maya?
Maya opened File 42 one final time.
At the bottom was a note nobody had noticed.
Three words.
Written by her mother.
MAYA KNOWS WHERE.
May you like
Maya stared at them.
Then she remembered the recipe book.
