Chapter 10 - VICTOR’S LAST MOVE

Victor raised his weapon.

Cole fired first.

The shot struck the ground beside Victor.

“Drop it!”

Victor grabbed Maya.

He pulled her against him.

His arm locked around her throat.

The weapon pressed against her side.

Ethan staggered from the ruins.

“Maya!”

Victor dragged her toward the vehicle.

“Back away.”

Cole stopped.

Federal agents surrounded them.

Victor smiled against Maya’s ear.

“Your mother made the same mistake.”

Maya went still.

“What mistake?”

“Thinking evidence makes people brave.”

He tightened his grip.

“It doesn’t.”

Maya looked at Ethan.

Blood ran from a cut above his eye.

Daniel was on the ground behind him in restraints.

Ethan met Maya’s gaze.

Then he looked downward.

Victor’s injured knee.

Maya understood.

She drove her heel backward.

Victor stumbled.

Ethan charged.

The weapon fired.

Maya fell.

Victor crashed into Ethan.

Agents rushed forward.

Cole tackled Victor.

Maya heard screaming.

Then Ethan collapsed.

“Ethan!”

She crawled toward him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

He looked at her.

“You okay?”

She stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re asking me?”

He smiled weakly.

“Bad habit.”

Medics ran toward them.

Maya pressed her hands against the wound.

“Stay awake.”

“Maya.”

“No.”

“I need to tell you something.”

“You can tell me at the hospital.”

“I knew your mother.”

Maya froze.

“What?”

“Before you.”

She stared at him.

“She recruited me.”

Everything stopped.

“What did you say?”

Ethan struggled to breathe.

“I wasn’t Victor’s man first.”

Maya’s hands trembled.

“Then whose were you?”

May you like

Ethan looked at the red folder in her father’s hands.

“Your mother’s.”
