Chapter 11 - THE MAN HER MOTHER CHOSE

Ethan survived surgery.

The bullet had missed his heart.

Maya sat outside his hospital room for three hours before she finally entered.

He was awake.

“You lied again.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Explain.”

He told her everything.

At twenty-two, Ethan had been a junior analyst inside Northbridge.

He discovered irregular transfers.

Before he could report them, Maya’s mother contacted him.

She knew Victor was watching her.

She needed someone inside.

Someone young.

Someone invisible.

Ethan agreed.

He spent four years feeding her information.

Then she died.

Victor suspected Ethan but could never prove it.

So Ethan did the only thing he believed would keep him alive.

He went deeper.

He became useful.

Eventually, Victor trusted him.

Then came Maya.

“Your mother left instructions.”

Maya stared.

“What instructions?”

“If anything happened to her, I was supposed to make sure Victor never reached you.”

“So you married me?”

“No.”

Ethan looked ashamed.

“I met you because of the assignment.”

He swallowed.

“I married you because I fell in love with you.”

Maya turned away.

“That doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You controlled who I saw.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about money.”

“Yes.”

“You made me think I was paranoid.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Maya’s voice broke.

“You became exactly like him.”

That hurt him more than anything else.

“I know.”

Silence filled the room.

Maya looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Victor had people everywhere.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Ethan looked toward the window.

“Because after years of lying, I forgot how to tell the truth without controlling what happened afterward.”

Maya understood.

That did not mean she forgave him.

“You saved my life.”

“I also damaged it.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya walked toward the door.

“Maya?”

She stopped.

“What happens to us?”

She looked back.

“There is no us.”

His face fell.

“But there may someday be a version of you that isn’t owned by secrets.”

She left.

Outside, Cole was waiting.

“We opened your mother’s evidence.”

Maya’s heart tightened.

“And?”

Cole handed her a list.

Thirty-seven names.

Three judges.

Six police officers.

Two federal contractors.

Nine executives.

Lawyers.

Doctors.

Private investigators.

May you like

And one name Maya never expected.

Her father.
