Chapter 2: The Woman Who Lied

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Lied

The woman introduced herself as Claire Dawson.

She claimed the little girl was her daughter, Emily.

She said Emily had been playing outside and got scared during the storm.

Jack didn’t believe her.

Not after seeing the locked shed.

Not after seeing the child sleeping on cold hay.

“Why was your daughter locked inside?”

Claire’s face hardened.

“She wasn’t locked inside.”

Jack pointed at the broken lock.

“Then explain that.”

Claire became defensive.

“You’re a stranger. You have no idea what happened here.”

Jack stared at Emily.

The little girl refused to look at Claire.

That alone told him something was wrong.

Then Jack noticed something hanging around Emily’s neck.

A small silver necklace.

A symbol he recognized.

A symbol from his own family.

His expression changed.

Because that necklace belonged to someone who had disappeared twelve years ago.
