Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE THAT WASN’T OURS

My father lived forty minutes away.
For four years, that distance had felt like another country.
When he opened the door and saw me holding Maisie, his face broke.
“Claire.”
That was all he said.
I stepped into his arms.
I cried harder than I had at Margaret’s house.
Not because I was suddenly weak.
Because I finally felt safe enough to fall apart.
Dad knelt in front of Maisie.
“Hi, bug.”
She stared at him.
“You Grandpa?”
His eyes filled.
“Yeah.”
She touched his nose.
“Grandpa Daniel?”
He laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Later, after Maisie fell asleep on his couch, Tessa opened the folder she had brought.
Screenshots.
Emails.
Bank records.
Messages from Margaret to a lawyer.
Dad spread them across the kitchen table.
I found one message dated two months earlier.
Evan will eventually understand Claire is not emotionally fit to raise Maisie.
Another:
If he refuses to file, I may need to force the financial issue.
I looked at Tessa.
“What financial issue?”
She stared at the table.
“Your house.”
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?”
Dad pushed a document toward me.
My mortgage statement.
Except something was wrong.
There was another name attached.
Margaret Louise Hale.
“What is this?”
Tessa whispered:
“Mom helped Evan with the down payment.”
“I know.”
“No, Claire. She didn’t give him the money.”
I looked at her.
“She loaned it?”
“Not exactly.”
Dad spoke quietly.
“She owns forty percent of your house.”
I laughed.
“No.”
Neither of them smiled.
I grabbed the paper.
My hands shook.
“How?”
“Evan signed paperwork before closing.”
“He never told me.”
“I don’t think he understood what he signed,” Tessa said.
That sounded exactly like Evan.
Careless.
Trusting.
Dependent.
I wanted to hate him for it.
I did hate him.
But somehow the truth was worse.
Margaret hadn’t simply controlled her son emotionally.
She had built financial chains around him.
Dad pulled out another record.
“There’s more.”
A transfer.
Forty-eight thousand dollars.
From an account I recognized.
Mine.
“What the hell is that?”
The transfer was dated three years earlier.
One month after Maisie was born.
Recipient:
Hale Family Holdings LLC.
I stared at it.
“I never authorized this.”
Tessa whispered:
“Mom had access to Evan’s computer.”
“That wasn’t his money!”
Dad looked at me carefully.
“I know.”
I stood so fast the chair hit the wall.
“She stole from me?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“We need proof of who initiated it.”
My phone buzzed.
Evan.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw his message.
Claire, I found something in Mom’s office. Please call me. It’s about Maisie.
May you like
A second message appeared.
And I think my mother has been lying to me my entire life.
