Chapter 3 - THE FATHER I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO TRUST

My father had been erased from my life slowly.

That was the worst part.

There had been no dramatic fight.

No final goodbye.

Just years of Margaret telling me that Daniel Mercer was controlling.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Evan repeated those warnings after we married.

“He hates our family.”

“He wants to interfere.”

“He only calls when he wants something.”

Eventually, I stopped answering my father’s calls.

Then he stopped making them.

Now his voice came through Tessa’s phone.

“Claire, listen to me.”

Margaret shouted, “Hang up!”

I grabbed the phone.

“Dad?”

His breath shook.

“I’m here.”

“Why are you watching this?”

“Tessa sent me the livestream link.”

I looked at her.

She nodded.

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

Margaret rushed forward.

“This is insane!”

My father’s voice hardened.

“Claire, leave.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because Margaret has been collecting evidence against you.”

I almost laughed.

“Against me?”

“She’s been telling people you’re an unfit mother.”

Evan stared at Margaret.

“What?”

For the first time, his confusion looked real.

Margaret waved a hand.

“Your father is lying.”

My dad continued.

“She contacted a family-law attorney eight weeks ago.”

The room tilted beneath me.

“For what?”

“To ask what would happen if Evan filed for emergency custody.”

I turned toward my husband.

His face drained of color.

“I didn’t.”

“Did you know?”

“No!”

Margaret snapped, “Daniel has always hated me.”

My father ignored her.

“I have copies of messages.”

“How?”

“Tessa.”

I looked at her again.

She whispered:

“I photographed Mom’s iPad.”

Margaret slapped the table.

“You went through my private messages?”

“You were planning to take Maisie!”

“I was protecting my granddaughter!”

“From what?” I shouted.

She looked directly at me.

“From you.”

Silence.

Margaret stepped closer.

“You’re unstable, Claire.”

My mouth went dry.

“You explode.”

“You mean like when someone hits my child?”

“You slapped your husband three times in front of witnesses.”

My blood turned cold.

She smiled.

Small.

Controlled.

That was when I understood.

She wasn’t embarrassed by what had happened.

She was studying it.

Using it.

Building something.

My father spoke through the phone.

“That’s why you need to leave now.”

I grabbed my purse.

“I’m taking Maisie.”

Evan moved in front of me.

“Wait.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Mom contacted an attorney?”

Margaret said quickly, “Because Claire is unpredictable.”

He looked at her.

“You told me you were helping with estate planning.”

She didn’t answer.

Evan’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

For the first time in our marriage, I watched him look at his mother with suspicion.

Then headlights swept across the front windows.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Margaret checked the clock.

Her face tightened.

Tessa whispered, “Were you expecting someone?”

Margaret said nothing.

Three heavy knocks hit the front door.

May you like

Then a man outside called:

“Mrs. Hale? Police.”
