Chapter 4 - THE REPORT

Margaret smiled.
That smile terrified me more than the knocking.
“I called them.”
Evan stared at her.
“When?”
“After Claire attacked you.”
“You called the police on my wife?”
“She assaulted you.”
“She was angry because you hit our daughter!”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“You need to be careful what you say.”
The knocking came again.
“Police!”
I held Maisie against me.
She had stopped crying.
That scared me too.
She was exhausted.
Two-year-olds weren’t supposed to understand family wars.
Yet somehow Maisie seemed to know she needed to be quiet.
Tessa stepped beside me.
“The livestream is saved.”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“Not if you delete it.”
“I already sent it to Dad.”
Margaret looked like she might slap her own daughter.
Evan opened the door.
Two officers entered.
A woman named Officer Ramirez.
A younger man named Keller.
Ramirez’s eyes immediately went to Maisie’s cheek.
“What happened?”
Margaret started first.
“My daughter-in-law became violent.”
I interrupted.
“My mother-in-law slapped my child.”
Ramirez looked back at Maisie.
“Did you see it?”
Evan opened his mouth.
Closed it.
I almost screamed.
Tessa answered.
“Yes.”
Ramirez turned.
“And you are?”
“Tessa Hale. Margaret’s daughter.”
“Did your mother strike the child?”
“Yes.”
Margaret shouted, “Tessa!”
“And we have video.”
That changed everything.
Ramirez asked to see it.
Tessa played the recording.
Nobody spoke.
We watched Margaret slap Maisie.
We watched Evan remain seated.
We watched me slap Evan.
Three times.
When it ended, Officer Keller exhaled slowly.
Ramirez looked at me.
“You understand striking your husband is also assault.”
“Yes.”
Evan immediately said:
“I don’t want to press charges.”
Margaret snapped, “Yes, you do.”
“No.”
His voice was louder this time.
Everyone looked at him.
“I said no.”
It may have been the first time he had ever openly disobeyed her.
Margaret’s face changed.
Ramirez looked at Maisie again.
“Has your mother-in-law ever hit the child before?”
“I don’t know.”
My voice cracked.
“But my daughter said, ‘Nana says don’t tell.’”
Ramirez’s expression sharpened.
She crouched several feet from Maisie.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Maisie buried her face against me.
Ramirez didn’t push.
She stood again.
“We’re going to document the injury.”
Margaret scoffed.
“It’s barely a mark.”
Officer Ramirez looked at her.
“Ma’am, I suggest you stop talking.”
Margaret finally fell silent.
Twenty minutes later, I carried Maisie toward the door.
Evan followed.
“Claire.”
I turned.
He looked destroyed.
“Can I come with you?”
“No.”
His face crumpled.
“I’m her father.”
“Then start acting like one.”
I walked away.
Tessa came with me.
Behind us, Margaret shouted something at Evan.
I didn’t hear all of it.
But I heard one sentence clearly.
“You have no idea what I’ve done for you.”
Evan stopped.
Then Margaret said:
“Ask your wife where the money came from.”
I turned around.
May you like
“What money?”
Nobody answered.
