CHAPTER 2 — The Strangers Who Became Family

CHAPTER 2 — The Strangers Who Became Family

The elderly couple introduced themselves as Harold and Beatrice Whitmore.

They told Meredith their son had left them at a bus station after an argument.

No money.

No phone.

No place to go.

Meredith knew she should walk away.

Her apartment was already too small.

Her bank account was nearly empty.

Her unborn child needed everything she could save.

But when she looked at Beatrice’s trembling hands, she saw herself.

A woman who had spent her whole life waiting for someone to choose her.

Meredith opened her apartment door.

“It’s not much…”

She looked embarrassed.

“But it’s warm.”

Harold stared at her.

“You don’t know us.”

Meredith smiled sadly.

“No.”

Then she touched her stomach.

“But I know what it feels like to be left in the cold.”

That night, Meredith cooked her last two packs of noodles.

She divided them into three bowls.

She lied and said she had already eaten.

Harold knew.

But he said nothing.

The next morning, Meredith woke up to something she had not heard in months.

People talking.

A kettle boiling.

Someone laughing.

Beatrice had cleaned the kitchen.

Harold had repaired the leaking sink.

For the first time since Wesley died…

Meredith’s apartment felt like a home.

But she didn’t know the old man fixing her broken chair was hiding a past that could shake Chicago.
