CHAPTER 1 — The Woman With Only $123

CHAPTER 1 — The Woman With Only $123
Meredith Conway had learned one painful truth about life.
Sometimes the people who had the least were the ones expected to give the most.
The night she counted her money under the weak yellow kitchen light, she already knew the answer.
One hundred twenty-three dollars.
That was everything.
Her rent was due.
Her medical appointment was coming.
Her husband’s funeral debt was still waiting.
And inside her tiny apartment, seven months pregnant, Meredith sat alone with a hand resting over the child who would never meet his father.
Three months earlier, Wesley Conway had kissed her forehead before leaving for work.
“Take care of your mama until I get back, little one.”
Those were his last words.
The construction accident took him before noon.
The company called it an accident.
The lawyers called it complicated.
Meredith called it the moment her world ended.
But she still woke up every morning.
Because her baby needed her.
That night, after cleaning offices downtown, Meredith walked home through the freezing Chicago rain.
She was tired.
Hungry.
And completely alone.
Until she saw two elderly strangers sitting beneath a broken pharmacy awning.
A woman coughing.
A man holding an old canvas bag.
People walked past them.
Everyone looked away.
Meredith almost did too.
She barely had enough for herself.
But then the woman whispered:
“Please… don’t leave us here.”
Meredith stopped.
Because she knew that feeling.
Being abandoned.
Being forgotten.
She slowly walked toward them.

And without knowing it…
she had just changed three lives forever.
