Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Came Back Smiling

The scariest moment was not when Nathan betrayed me.

It was when he came back pretending he had not.

The hospital room looked exactly the same.

The white walls.

The soft beeping machines.

The small crib beside my bed.

Everything looked peaceful.

But I knew the truth.

A war had already started.

And the person standing closest to me was the enemy.

After receiving the message, Mae immediately took my phone.

“Do not respond.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever sent this wants to know how much you know.”

I stared at the screen.

My hands were shaking.

“Nathan knows.”

Mae nodded.

“Yes.”

“How?”

She looked toward the door.

“Because someone told him.”

Simone stepped closer.

“Or because someone inside this hospital is helping them.”

The three of us became silent.

The hospital no longer felt like a place where mothers came to give birth.

It felt like a trap.

Then the door opened.

Nathan walked in.

My husband.

The man I loved.

The man who held my hand when our son kicked for the first time.

He carried flowers.

He smiled.

And that smile made me feel sick.

“Leah.”

His voice was gentle.

Too gentle.

“There you are.”

I looked at him carefully.

“Where have you been?”

He paused.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“I was talking with the doctors.”

“About what?”

He placed the flowers on the table.

“About your recovery.”

I almost laughed.

“My recovery?”

“Yes.”

“You mean my mental health?”

His face changed.

A tiny crack appeared.

Then it disappeared.

“What are you talking about?”

I stared at him.

“You tell me.”

Nathan walked closer.

“Leah, you just gave birth.”

“You are exhausted.”

“You are emotional.”

“There is a lot happening right now.”

His words were carefully chosen.

Like someone had coached him.

I looked at Mae.

Then back at him.

“Did you sign something?”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“Did you sign a psychiatric hold request?”

The color disappeared from his face.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“You need rest.”

I felt my chest tighten.

That was his answer.

Not denial.

Not anger.

Not shock.

Just avoidance.

“You did.”

Nathan sighed.

“Leah.”

“No.”

My voice became stronger.

“You did.”

He looked at the baby.

Then lowered his voice.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I stared at him.

“From what?”

“From yourself.”

Those words hurt more than any scream.

I felt something inside me break.

“You think I’m dangerous?”

“No.”

“You think I cannot be trusted with my own son?”

Nathan said nothing.

And silence was the answer.

Then Doreen appeared behind him.

Of course she did.

She entered like she belonged there.

“Leah.”

Her smile was calm.

“We need to have a conversation.”

I looked at both of them.

The husband.

The mother.

The people who were supposed to protect me.

Instead, they stood together.

Against me.

Doreen sat beside the bed.

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Family decisions are not always easy.”

I laughed softly.

“Taking my baby is a family decision?”

Her expression hardened.

“No one is taking anything.”

“Then why did you prepare custody papers?”

Silence.

Nathan looked at his mother.

Doreen looked back at him.

A silent conversation passed between them.

And I saw it.

The truth.

Nathan was not the leader.

He was the follower.

Doreen controlled everything.

She always had.

Doreen stood.

“You need to rest.”

Then she walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she stopped.

“You should be careful, Leah.”

I looked at her.

“Is that a threat?”

She smiled.

“No.”

“It is advice.”

Then she whispered:

“People who fight against their own family usually lose.”

The door closed.

May you like

And I knew.

They were no longer pretending.
