Chapter 12 - The Evidence Doreen Never Found

Clara Whitaker looked nothing like the person in the old photograph.

Twenty years had changed her.

Her hair was gray.

Her face carried years of pain.

But her eyes were the same.

Eyes that had searched for her child every day.

Simone ran toward her.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Simone cried.

“You’re alive.”

Clara nodded.

“I never stopped looking for him.”

“Why did you disappear?”

Clara looked around the room.

At the hospital walls.

At the people watching.

Then she whispered:

“Because Doreen made sure nobody would believe me.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“You know my mother?”

Clara looked at him.

And sadness crossed her face.

“I knew you when you were a child.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“You used to play with Ethan.”

My heart tightened.

“She knew you.”

Clara nodded.

“She was my friend.”

Everyone became silent.

“Before she became my enemy.”

Clara opened the envelope.

Inside was a small flash drive.

“I kept copies.”

“Copies of what?”

“Everything.”

She looked at Nathan.

“Your mother did not accidentally lose Ethan.”

“She planned it.”

Nathan looked sick.

“How?”

Clara took a breath.

“Doreen believed children created power.”

“She believed the person who controlled the child controlled the family.”

“She wanted Ethan because he was the child of a wealthy family.”

“But when she could not legally keep him…”

“She changed the story.”

Mae asked:

“What happened to Ethan?”

Clara looked down.

“He survived.”

“Where is he?”

Clara hesitated.

Then answered:

“He spent years trying to expose her.”

My heart raced.

“Is he alive?”

Clara nodded.

“Yes.”

Nathan grabbed the table.

“Where?”

Clara looked directly at him.

“He is closer than you think.”

Before anyone could ask another question, the hospital alarm sounded again.

This time louder.

A security announcement followed.

“Unauthorized access detected.”

Mae looked toward the hallway.

“She is coming.”

Doreen.

Again.

Always one step behind.

Clara grabbed my hand.

“Leah.”

“Yes?”

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“She does not want your baby because she loves him.”

“She wants your baby because she lost control of her own story.”

I looked at my son.

The tiny life sleeping in my arms.

The child everyone was fighting over.

Then Clara whispered:

“She has done this before.”

“She will do anything to win.”

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Everyone froze.

A shadow appeared beneath the door.

Then Doreen’s voice came through.

“You should have stayed quiet.”

Nathan looked at the door.

His face hardened.

“No more.”

The door opened.

Doreen stepped inside.

But this time…

She was not smiling.

Because behind us stood someone she never expected to see again.

Someone who could destroy everything.

Clara Whitaker.

Doreen’s face lost all color.

May you like

For the first time…

She looked afraid.
