Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Came Back From The Dead

Nathan spent the next hour searching through every file connected to Ethan.

The hospital archive.

The adoption records.

The old medical reports.

Nothing made sense.

Until Mae found one document hidden beneath another.

A birth certificate.

Not Ethan’s.

A different baby.

A baby born twenty years earlier.

The mother’s name was:

Clara Whitaker.

Simone froze.

“Whitaker?”

Mae looked at her.

“You know that name?”

Simone slowly sat down.

“That was my mother’s name.”

Everyone became silent.

I looked at her.

“Your mother?”

Simone nodded.

“She disappeared when I was young.”

Nathan stared at the document.

“Clara was Ethan’s mother.”

Simone covered her mouth.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Mae turned the page.

The hospital record showed something impossible.

Clara had given birth to a baby boy.

The baby was transferred.

Then the records changed.

The child was listed as deceased.

But there was no death certificate.

No funeral record.

No burial information.

Nothing.

The baby simply vanished.

I looked at Simone.

“Your mother knew?”

Simone’s eyes filled with tears.

“She spent years trying to find him.”

“She told everyone nobody believed her.”

Nathan whispered:

“My mother erased him.”

Then the room became silent.

Because we finally understood.

Doreen’s obsession with controlling my baby was not new.

She had done it before.

She had taken control of another mother’s child.

Mae looked at the records.

“But why?”

Nathan answered quietly.

“Because she wanted a perfect family.”

A perfect image.

A perfect name.

A perfect legacy.

And anyone who threatened that image disappeared.

Then Simone suddenly stood.

“I know where my mother kept her evidence.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What evidence?”

“When she disappeared, she left behind a box.”

“A box she told me never to open unless I found Ethan.”

My heart raced.

“Where is it?”

Simone looked toward the hospital exit.

“At my apartment.”

Nathan grabbed his coat.

“We need to get it.”

But before we could move, the hospital doors opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a small envelope.

Nobody recognized her.

Except Simone.

Her face turned completely white.

“Mom?”

The woman looked at her.

And whispered:

“Simone.”

The world stopped.

Because everyone believed Clara Whitaker had disappeared twenty years ago.

But she was standing in front of us.

May you like

Alive.

And she had the answer to everything.
