Chapter 9 - The Son His Father Created

Adrian hated hospitals.
Nursing homes were worse.
Too many narrow halls.
Too many innocent people.
Too many places for an enemy to hide behind someone helpless.
He looked at Marco.
“Evacuate the floor.”
Marco nodded.
“No shooting unless necessary.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
Adrian ignored him.
Isabella noticed.
“You’ve changed.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Not enough.”
They moved Isabella toward a rear service stairwell.
Marco’s men entered through a side entrance.
Carlo’s team moved from the lobby.
For thirty seconds, the building became a chessboard.
Then someone pulled the fire alarm.
Sirens erupted.
Sprinklers activated.
Residents began shouting.
Staff rushed into the hallway.
Chaos.
Perfect cover.
Daniel held Isabella’s arm.
“Stay close.”
She looked at him.
“You sound like your brother.”
“Terrifying thought.”
They reached the stairwell.
A man stepped through the door below them.
Gun raised.
Adrian fired once.
The man fell backward.
Isabella froze.
Adrian lowered the weapon.
Her eyes were fixed on him.
He knew that look.
Disappointment.
Fear.
Memory.
“Mother.”
“You didn’t hesitate.”
“He was aiming at Daniel.”
She said nothing.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You asked whether I changed.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t say I became harmless.”
Daniel looked away.
Despite himself, he almost smiled.
They exited through the loading dock.
Marco had a vehicle waiting.
Isabella climbed inside.
Daniel followed.
Adrian stopped.
Across the parking lot stood a man in a dark coat.
Older.
Heavyset.
Carlo Moretti.
He was fifty yards away.
Unarmed.
Smiling.
Adrian’s entire body went still.
Daniel saw him.
“Carlo.”
Isabella turned.
Her face drained of color.
Carlo raised one hand.
Not a threat.
A greeting.
Then he called across the lot.
“Adrian!”
Adrian did not move.
Carlo smiled.
“Ask your mother who really killed Vittorio.”
Isabella closed her eyes.
Adrian looked at her.
Carlo turned and walked away.
Marco raised his weapon.
Adrian stopped him.
“No.”
Daniel stared.
“You’re letting him go?”
“Too many civilians.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Or you want the answer?”
Adrian looked at Isabella.
“Yes.”
They drove in silence.
Back at the estate, Emily ran toward Isabella.
Nobody had introduced them.
The child simply stared up at her.
Isabella stared back.
Then slowly knelt.
Emily touched her silver hair.
“You have my eyes.”
Everyone in the room froze.
Isabella laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Emily smiled.
Daniel looked away.
Sofia wiped her face.
Adrian stood near the fireplace.
For a brief second, the Moretti family looked almost normal.
Then Isabella spoke.
“We need to discuss Vittorio.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
They moved into the study.
Sofia stayed with Emily.
Isabella sat across from her sons.
“Your father did not die from a stroke.”
Adrian said nothing.
Daniel frowned.
“How did he die?”
Isabella looked at Adrian.
“He was poisoned.”
Daniel turned toward his brother.
Adrian’s face remained unreadable.
“By whom?”
Isabella answered.
“Me.”
Silence.
Daniel stared.
Adrian did not.
He almost looked relieved.
“Why?”
“Because he was going to kill you.”
Adrian finally reacted.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Isabella reached into her bag.
She removed an old envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten order.
Daniel recognized their father’s signature.
The instruction was simple.
If Adrian refuses succession restructuring, remove him before the October vote.
Adrian read it twice.
“He planned to kill me.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at Isabella.
“So you killed Father.”
“I gave him a blood thinner that interacted with his medication.”
Adrian stared at the page.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Carlo helped me.”
That changed everything.
Daniel sat back.
“What?”
Isabella nodded.
“Carlo supplied the drug.”
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
“Then he has proof.”
“Yes.”
“He’s been holding it over you.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Five years.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
Carlo had not merely controlled politicians.
He had controlled Isabella.
The executor.
The one person capable of changing the trust.
Daniel spoke.
“What did he make you do?”
“Nothing at first.”
“That doesn’t sound like Carlo.”
“He was waiting.”
“For the succession clause.”
“Yes.”
Adrian turned.
“And now he wants you to sign something.”
Isabella nodded.
“A transfer of emergency trustee authority.”
“To him.”
“Yes.”
Daniel cursed.
Adrian’s voice became low.
“If you refuse?”
“He releases proof that I killed Vittorio.”
Daniel frowned.
“So?”
Isabella looked at him.
“So I go to prison.”
Daniel shrugged.
“You killed a man who was planning to murder your son.”
“It is not that simple.”
Adrian understood.
“It’s not prison she fears.”
Isabella looked at him.
He continued.
“If Carlo exposes her, he discredits the executor.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“And the court appoints a replacement.”
“Carlo.”
Isabella nodded.
Exactly.
Adrian sat.
For the first time, the problem was fully visible.
Carlo held the archive.
The trust.
Their mother’s crime.
Daniel’s existence.
Emily’s inheritance.
Every thread led to him.
Or so he wanted them to believe.
Adrian looked at Isabella.
“When Father planned my death, why?”
She hesitated.
“Because you wanted to modernize the organization.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
“What else?”
She looked down.
“Because you discovered something.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“You were asking questions about missing money.”
He remembered.
Five years ago.
Nearly eighty million dollars missing from shipping subsidiaries.
His father had dismissed it as accounting errors.
Adrian had stopped investigating after Vittorio died.
“Carlo stole it.”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
She looked at Daniel.
Daniel stared back.
Then Isabella said the one name none of them expected.
“Marco.”
Silence.
Adrian looked toward the closed study door.
His security chief stood somewhere outside.
The man who had protected him for fifteen years.
The man who had just helped rescue Emily.
The man who knew every entrance.
Every camera.
Every weakness in the estate.
Daniel slowly stood.
“Where is he?”
May you like
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
Then all the lights in the house went out.
