Chapter 11 - The Vault Beneath the Chapel

The stone floor finished opening with a deep mechanical groan.
Cold air rose from the darkness beneath the chapel.
Carlo stepped closer.
For the first time that night, real hunger appeared in his eyes.
Not greed for money.
Something worse.
Control.
For decades, the Moretti archive had been whispered about in private rooms.
Men had killed for rumors of it.
Politicians had changed votes because of it.
Judges had buried cases because they feared what might be inside.
Now the secret was finally open.
A narrow staircase descended beneath the altar.
Carlo smiled.
“After you.”
Adrian did not move.
Carlo raised his pistol toward Emily.
Daniel’s entire body tightened.
“Don’t.”
Carlo looked at him.
“I’m beginning to understand why you disappeared.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You’ll never leave this house.”
Carlo laughed.
“You still think this is Adrian’s house?”
He glanced around the chapel.
“I helped build this place.”
“I paid the contractors.”
“I chose the wiring.”
“I installed men inside the staff.”
“I knew where Adrian slept before he did.”
Adrian’s voice remained calm.
“And yet you still needed us to open the vault.”
Carlo’s smile faded slightly.
“Yes.”
“That must bother you.”
Carlo stepped closer.
“Go downstairs.”
Adrian descended first.
Daniel followed.
Then Isabella.
Two armed men forced Sofia and Emily behind them.
Carlo came last.
The vault was larger than Adrian expected.
Not a safe.
A room.
Steel shelves ran from floor to ceiling.
Hundreds of labeled boxes filled them.
Old reel tapes.
Hard drives.
Ledgers.
Photographs.
Sealed envelopes.
Bank records.
Enough information to destroy careers, governments, families, and perhaps entire institutions.
Daniel stared.
“This is what Father protected.”
Isabella answered quietly.
“No.”
“This is what he worshipped.”
Carlo walked past them.
His fingers brushed across the files almost tenderly.
“You never understood Vittorio.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You sound proud.”
“I respected him.”
“He tried to murder both his sons.”
Carlo shrugged.
“He understood necessity.”
Daniel laughed.
“That’s what cowards call cruelty when they don’t want to admit what they are.”
Carlo’s expression hardened.
Then his attention shifted to a black steel cabinet at the back of the room.
He smiled again.
“There.”
Adrian followed his gaze.
A brass plaque read:
PRIMARY CONTROL INDEX.
Carlo approached it.
“Open it.”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
Carlo pointed the gun toward Emily again.
Isabella closed her eyes.
Adrian stepped forward.
“She cannot open it alone.”
Carlo frowned.
“What?”
“The cabinet requires all three signatures.”
Carlo looked at Isabella.
She nodded.
“Mine.”
“Adrian’s.”
“Daniel’s.”
Carlo cursed under his breath.
Then he gestured.
“Do it.”
Adrian placed his thumb on the first scanner.
Daniel did the same.
Isabella entered a six-digit code.
The cabinet unlocked.
Inside was one slim black server.
Nothing more.
Carlo stared.
“All of it is in there?”
Isabella answered.
“The index links everything.”
Carlo reached for it.
Adrian watched the tiny green light beneath the server.
Still blinking.
Marco was receiving the copy.
Good.
Carlo pulled the device free.
The light died.
He smiled.
“At last.”
Then Marco’s voice came from the chapel speakers above.
“Copy complete.”
Carlo froze.
Adrian smiled for the first time.
Carlo slowly turned.
“What did you do?”
Adrian looked at him.
“You taught me something years ago.”
“Never let one man control the only copy.”
Carlo’s face changed.
He raised his gun.
Daniel moved.
The first shot exploded through the vault.
Everyone dropped.
Adrian slammed Carlo into the cabinet.
Daniel tackled one guard.
Sofia grabbed Emily and pulled her behind a shelf.
Isabella crouched beside them.
Gunfire erupted.
Metal screamed.
Boxes fell.
One of Carlo’s men fired toward Adrian.
Daniel shot him first.
Another rushed Sofia.
She grabbed a heavy ledger from the floor and swung it into his face.
He stumbled.
Adrian finished the fight.
Carlo broke free.
He fired wildly.
A bullet struck the overhead light.
Darkness swallowed half the vault.
Emergency lamps flickered red.
Carlo backed toward the stairs.
“Kill them!”
His remaining men opened fire.
Adrian dragged Daniel behind the cabinet.
“Three left.”
Daniel reloaded.
“Four.”
Adrian looked.
“One is down.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then three.”
For the first time in twelve years, the brothers moved together without hesitation.
Adrian fired left.
Daniel moved right.
One guard fell.
Another ran.
Marco’s team stormed into the chapel above.
Footsteps thundered down the stairs.
Carlo realized the fight was lost.
He grabbed Isabella by the arm.
Pulled her upright.
Pressed the gun beneath her jaw.
“Back!”
Everyone froze.
Adrian stared at him.
“Let her go.”
Carlo dragged Isabella toward the stairs.
“You think this ends with me?”
“Yes.”
Carlo laughed.
“No.”
He looked at Isabella.
“Tell them.”
She said nothing.
Carlo tightened his grip.
“Tell them what Vittorio wrote in his final testament.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What testament?”
Carlo smiled.
“The one your mother never showed you.”
Isabella went pale.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mother?”
Carlo laughed.
“There is always another secret in this family.”
Then he dragged Isabella upstairs.
Adrian followed.
Slowly.
Carefully.
At the chapel entrance, Carlo stopped.
Rain hammered the stained-glass windows.
His men were down.
Marco’s team surrounded the room.
No escape.
Carlo still smiled.
“Put your weapons down.”
Adrian did.
Daniel did not.
Carlo pressed the gun harder against Isabella.
“Daniel.”
He lowered it.
Carlo walked backward toward the side exit.
Then Isabella spoke.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her.
Her eyes were calm.
Too calm.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian understood one second too late.
She drove her elbow backward.
Carlo’s gun fired.
Isabella fell.
Adrian roared.
He crossed the chapel before Carlo could fire again.
He hit him once.
Hard.
Carlo crashed against the pews.
Daniel kicked the gun away.
Marco’s men rushed him.
Adrian dropped beside Isabella.
Blood spread across her blouse.
“Mother.”
She looked up.
Weakly.
“Not my heart.”
Adrian pressed his hand against the wound.
“Stay with me.”
She smiled faintly.
“You always hated being told what to do.”
“Then don’t start now.”
Her eyes closed.
Adrian shouted for the doctor.
Behind him, Carlo laughed from the floor.
Adrian turned.
Carlo’s face was bleeding.
But he was still smiling.
“You saved the wrong person.”
Adrian stood.
Slowly.
Carlo looked toward the vault.
“You think copying that archive makes you powerful?”
“No.”
May you like
Adrian stepped closer.
“It makes you finished.”
