Chapter 7 - The Clause Nobody Knew Existed

They returned to the estate at 3:07 a.m.
Sofia was waiting at the front door.
The moment she saw Emily, she ran.
Daniel barely had time to set the child down.
Sofia dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her.
Emily began crying again.
“Mama.”
Sofia kissed her hair.
Her cheeks.
Her forehead.
Then she looked up at Daniel.
For one second, gratitude softened her face.
Then the memory of three lost years returned.
She stood.
“Thank you.”
Daniel nodded.
It was the coldest thank you Adrian had ever heard.
Emily reached for him.
“Daddy stay.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
Daniel froze.
Adrian stepped away.
That family needed privacy.
But privacy was a luxury none of them had anymore.
Marco entered from the hallway.
“Boss.”
Adrian followed him into the study.
“What did you find?”
Marco placed a folder on the desk.
“The succession clause.”
Adrian opened it.
Legal language covered twelve pages.
The Moretti family trust had been created nearly sixty years earlier.
Most of it was boring.
Until Article Nine.
Adrian read it twice.
Then a third time.
“If more than one male descendant of the founder survives…”
Marco nodded.
“Control must be reallocated.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“How much?”
“Forty percent to Daniel.”
Adrian leaned back.
“And Emily?”
“If Daniel dies after recognition, his share transfers to her.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
“So Carlo wanted proof Daniel was alive because he needs the trust reopened.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marco hesitated.
“Because once it reopens, there is a ninety-day challenge period.”
Adrian understood.
“During which control can be disputed.”
“Exactly.”
Adrian laughed without humor.
Carlo did not need to kill Daniel tonight.
He needed Daniel alive long enough to destabilize Adrian’s control.
Then perhaps dead before the restructuring became permanent.
It was elegant.
Cruel.
Very Carlo.
Daniel entered the study.
“What did he activate?”
Adrian handed him the clause.
Daniel read.
His face hardened.
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
“Father did.”
“Obviously.”
Daniel continued reading.
Then stopped.
“There’s something missing.”
“What?”
“The executor.”
Adrian frowned.
“Executor?”
“The clause requires a neutral executor from the original trust.”
Marco searched the document.
His eyes narrowed.
“Name is sealed in an appendix.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Get it.”
Marco left.
Daniel poured himself whiskey.
Adrian watched him.
“You still drink that?”
Daniel looked at the glass.
“I learned from you.”
“No.”
Adrian poured water instead.
“You learned from Father.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Same thing, once.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Not anymore.”
Daniel said nothing.
The silence between them was complicated.
Twelve years.
Betrayal.
Grief.
Resentment.
Yet also blood.
Daniel finally spoke.
“You saved Emily.”
Adrian shrugged.
“She saved herself first.”
“The button.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“I put that tracker in the rabbit before I disappeared.”
“You expected a toddler to use it?”
“I expected Sofia to find it.”
Adrian looked at him.
“She never did.”
“No.”
“Which is a good summary of your entire protection plan.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Do you want to fight?”
“Eventually.”
Daniel almost laughed.
For one second, they were brothers again.
Then Marco returned.
His face was strange.
Adrian noticed immediately.
“What?”
Marco placed a single printed page on the desk.
“The executor’s name.”
Adrian read it.
He did not understand at first.
Then he did.
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?”
Adrian handed him the page.
Daniel stared.
The name read:
ISABELLA MORETTI.
Their mother.
Daniel looked up.
“She died nineteen years ago.”
Marco nodded.
“Officially.”
Adrian’s expression sharpened.
“What do you mean officially?”
Marco pulled another file from beneath his arm.
“I checked the death certificate.”
“And?”
“There are inconsistencies.”
Adrian stood.
“What kind?”
“No attending physician signature.”
“No hospital archive.”
“No cremation record.”
Daniel stared at him.
Adrian felt something cold move through his chest.
Their mother had supposedly died from complications after surgery.
He had been twenty-two.
Daniel seventeen.
Their father had arranged everything.
Private hospital.
Closed funeral.
Sealed coffin.
Again.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel understood the same thing.
“Father did it twice.”
Adrian’s voice was barely audible.
“Maybe.”
Marco continued.
“There’s more.”
He opened an old banking record.
“Isabella’s private trust continued making small annual withdrawals for eleven years after her reported death.”
Adrian stared.
“To whom?”
“Unknown.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
Daniel laughed once.
Not from humor.
“Mother is alive.”
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“Or someone wanted us to believe she was.”
Marco pointed at the records.
“The last withdrawal happened eight years ago.”
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Carlo knows.”
“Yes.”
“He has to.”
“Yes.”
“And if Mother is the executor…”
Adrian finished the thought.
“Then Carlo needs her.”
Silence.
A soft knock sounded at the study door.
Sofia stood there.
Emily slept in her arms.
Her face was pale.
“There’s something you should know.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
Sofia shifted Emily carefully.
“Before Daniel died…”
Daniel looked down.
Sofia corrected herself.
“Before I thought he died.”
Her voice hardened slightly.
“He gave me a name.”
Daniel frowned.
“I did?”
“You were bleeding.”
He went still.
“You said if anything happened, I should find someone named Isabella.”
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Sofia continued.
“You said she was the only person who could protect Emily from the Moretti family.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I don’t remember that.”
“You were barely conscious.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“What exactly did he say?”
Sofia thought.
Then repeated the words she had carried for three years.
“Find Isabella.”
“She knows what Father did.”
“And don’t trust Carlo.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Adrian looked at Marco.
“Find my mother.”
Marco nodded.
Adrian stopped him.
“Quietly.”
“If Carlo knows we’re looking, he’ll move first.”
May you like
Daniel looked toward Emily.
“He already has.”
