Chapter 4 - The Predator Walks In

The light in the elevator car spilled across the marble floor like ice water.
A lone silhouette stepped through the threshold. The clicking of Evelyn Vance’s low heels was measured, heavy, and rhythmic, carrying an unmistakable gravity that instantly drained the room of all remaining oxygen.
Carter dropped his arms, his posture snapping straight so fast he nearly spilled his mug. Three analysts by the water station flattened themselves against the sheetrock like frightened mice.
Brenda hadn't turned around yet. Her attention was still fixed on humiliating Elena. "Hear that? Security’s already here to escort your broke—"
"Brenda," Carter stammered from three feet away, his face turning the color of skim milk. "Brenda, turn around. Turn around right now."
"Shut up, Carter, I'm handling the trash!" Brenda snapped, whirling around with an impatient sneer—which died in her throat the instant her eyes locked onto the woman approaching the copier.
Evelyn Vance didn't have an entourage. She didn't carry an iPad or a notebook. She walked with both hands tucked loosely into the pockets of her tailored slate-gray trousers, her cold hazel eyes locked entirely onto Elena's swollen, bright red cheek.
The silence was so absolute you could hear the neon ballast hum in the ceiling.
"Mrs. Vance," Brenda gasped, her voice instantly shedding its venom, replaced by an oily, panicked deference. "W-we didn't expect you on this floor today. We had an incident with the temp. Total insubordination. I was just correcting her behavior before—"

Evelyn stopped six inches away from Brenda. She was taller, colder, and utterly devoid of mercy.
"Did you lay hands on her?" Evelyn’s voice was barely a murmur, smooth as crushed velvet, but loud enough to chill the spine of everyone within forty feet.
