Chapter 14 - Checkmate

Elena reached into her pocket, not for her phone, but for a slim keycard attached to a silver executive lanyard. She held it up to the wall terminal by the elevator bank and keyed in a four-digit override code.
The overhead video screens in the atrium flickered from the corporate news feed to an active live stream of the Port of Indiana.
Dozens of semi-trucks bearing the Vance blue-and-gold livery were already pulling away from the docks, bypassing Marcus Sterling’s staging yards entirely, rolling toward the newly acquired rail spurs fifty miles south.
"At noon today," Elena stated, her tone cold and surgical, "the Vance Executive Committee voted to reroute all Great Lakes distribution through the Canadian Pacific intermodal terminal in Detroit. The longshoremen aren't your leverage anymore, Marcus. We bought the rail line this morning with the cash we recovered from your wife's frozen offshore accounts."
Marcus stopped dead, his face turning from violent red to an ash-gray hue that mirrored his wife's collapse just hours earlier. "You... you can't redirect eight hundred thousand tons of freight in four hours."
"We can when the master plan was drawn up six months ago as my Stanford graduation thesis," Elena stepped into his personal space, tilting her chin up. "Your docks are empty, Marcus. The port authority just served your office with breach of lease notifications. You aren't here to threaten me. You're here because you just realized you're broke."
Marcus swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically between the live screens and the calm, unwavering twenty-two-year-old standing before him. He looked at his two security guards, but both men had already taken two steps back toward the elevators, reading the writing on the wall.

"You're a demon," Marcus rasped, voice cracking under the weight of complete financial ruin.
"No," Elena said softly, stepping aside as four Chicago police officers stepped out of the stairwell with arrest warrants in hand. "I’m just the intern you forgot to respect."
