Chapter 11 - The Daughter’s Terms

Evelyn walked back to where Elena was still standing beside the copier, examining the scattered documents on the floor.

"Come upstairs," Evelyn said quietly, extending an arm toward the executive car. "The corporate physician is on standby. We need to ice that cheek and get the legal affidavit signed before the federal prosecutors arrive."

Elena looked down at the paper-strewn floor, then up at her mother. She shook her head.

"Not yet."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed slightly with that familiar, predatory calculation. "Elena, you’ve proved your point. The audit worked. The criminal referral is filed. You don't need to stand here in the dust."

"That was your plan, Mom," Elena said, her voice dropping so only Evelyn could hear. "Catch the embezzler, make a corporate statement, protect the bottom line. That's how you run a empire."

"And what do you call it?" Evelyn countered.

Elena bent down and picked up a broom leaning against the maintenance cart by the supply closet. She held it firmly in both hands.

"I told these people I was here to work," Elena said, meeting the eyes of the terrified staff watching from their cubes. "If I walk into that private elevator right now, I’m just Evelyn Vance’s daughter who brought down a bad boss. Tomorrow, they’ll resent me. They’ll tiptoe around me, lie to me, and smile while stabbing me in the back because they think I’m an untouchable princess."

Evelyn watched her daughter with something rarely seen in her eyes: genuine, unadulterated respect.

"What are you going to do?"

"I’m going to clean up this paper," Elena said. "And then I’m going to sit at Desk 14B and finish the routing manifest for the Chicago terminal. Like I was hired to do."
