Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Nobody Expected

The voice echoed through the ballroom.
Everyone looked around.
"Show yourself!"
Liam shouted.
No answer.
Only silence.
Then the giant screen behind the stage turned on.
A video appeared.
A man sitting in darkness.
Nobody could see his face.
But his voice was clear.
"Twenty years ago, the Sterlings destroyed my life."
Victoria stared at the screen.
"What is this?"
The man continued.
"They took everything."
The guests became nervous.
Marcus tried to shut down the system.
"It's not working."
Avery held Leo closer.
"Liam..."
He immediately moved beside her.
"I won't let anything happen to you."
For the first time that night, Avery believed him.
Not because he was powerful.
Not because he was a Sterling.
Because he was her husband.
The video continued.
"The truth has been buried too long."
The man laughed.
"Tonight, everyone gets to watch the Sterling empire fall."
The screen showed documents.
Bank records.
Private conversations.
And then...
A photograph.
Avery stared.
Because the picture showed Victoria meeting someone in secret.
Someone she recognized.
Someone from the Sterling family.
Liam saw it too.
His face changed.
"No..."
Avery looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Liam didn't answer.
Because he couldn't.
The man on the screen spoke again.
"Your family didn't just betray Daniel Carter."
The screen zoomed in.
"They betrayed their own blood."
The lights suddenly flickered.
Then came back.
And standing near the stage...
Was Ethan Sterling.
Liam's younger brother.
Everyone gasped.
"Ethan?"
Liam stared.
"You were behind this?"
Ethan looked calm.
Almost relieved.
"For years, everyone thought I was the weak son."
He smiled.
"The forgotten son."
Victoria looked furious.
"What are you doing?"
Ethan laughed.
"What you taught me."
He walked closer.
"You taught me that in this family, kindness is weakness."
Liam shook his head.
"You're insane."
"No."
Ethan looked at him.
"I'm finally taking what should have been mine."
Avery felt a chill.
Because Ethan wasn't angry.
He was prepared.
He had planned everything.
"Why?"
Liam asked.
Ethan looked toward Victoria.
"Because she destroyed our father."
Then toward Avery.
"And because she brought the person who could destroy us all."
Avery frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Ethan smiled.
"Your father left one final secret."
Daniel's face changed.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan laughed.
"Yes."
He stepped closer.
"The original Sterling inheritance wasn't left to Liam."
The room went silent.
"It was left to Avery Carter."
Avery froze.
"What?"
Liam looked at his wife.
Ethan continued.
"Your father and Charles Sterling created a secret agreement."
He smiled.
"Because they knew one day..."
"Someone would have to save the Sterling empire from itself."
Avery stared at everyone.
Her entire life had been a lie.
Her father's disappearance.
Her marriage.
Her place in the Sterling family.
Everything.
Then Ethan whispered the words that changed everything:
"Congratulations, Avery."
May you like
"You didn't marry into the Sterling family."
"You inherited it."
