Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH THEY TRIED TO BURY

The abandoned research facility stood outside the city.
Broken windows.
Rusting gates.
A place everyone thought was forgotten.
But inside…
Someone had been there recently.
Alexander and Emily walked through the dark hallway.
Every step felt like walking into the past.
“This is where my father worked.”
Alexander’s voice was quiet.
Emily looked around.
“And where Noah was taken.”
He looked at her.
“You remember?”
She closed her eyes.
Pieces came back.
The hallway.
The voices.
The fear.
Then one memory hit her harder than the others.
“Noah wasn’t taken from here.”
Alexander stopped.
“What?”
“He left with someone.”
“Who?”
Emily looked at him.
“My father.”
Alexander froze.
“Victor?”
She nodded.
“He was trying to save him.”
That changed everything.
All these years, Alexander believed his father had failed.
But maybe his father had been fighting alone.
They entered the main laboratory.
On the wall were hundreds of files.
Names.
Records.
Evidence.
Alexander searched through them.
Then he found one.
CARTER, NOAH.
He opened it.
Inside were photos.
Medical reports.
And a video file.
Emily pressed play.
The screen showed Noah.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Emily, if you found this, then Alexander is with you.”
Alexander looked surprised.
Noah continued.
“I need you to understand something.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“Alexander’s father didn’t betray us.”
Emily covered her mouth.
“He protected us.”
Alexander looked away.
His entire understanding of his father collapsed.
Noah continued.
“The people who destroyed the Kingston family wanted control of everything.”
“They used my research.”
“They used Victor.”
“And when he tried to expose them, they killed him.”
Alexander’s fists tightened.
“My father…”
Emily reached toward him.
For once, the powerful millionaire looked completely broken.
Then Noah said:
“But there is one person who knows the entire truth.”
The screen flickered.
A name appeared.
The person behind everything.
Alexander stared.
“No.”
Emily looked at him.
“Who is it?”
He didn’t answer.
Because the name belonged to someone they trusted.
Someone who had been helping them.
Someone who had been standing beside them the entire time.
Victoria Hale.
The video continued.
“If Victoria tells you she is helping, be careful.”
Emily turned slowly.
Victoria was standing behind them.
Her face had gone pale.
Alexander immediately stepped between them.
“Explain.”
Victoria looked down.
“I can explain.”
Emily’s voice trembled.
“How long have you known?”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Since the beginning.”
The betrayal hurt more than the danger.
Emily whispered:
“You knew Noah was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me suffer for ten years?”
Victoria looked broken.
“I was protecting you.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You were deciding for me.”
A silence followed.
Then Victoria reached into her bag.
Everyone reacted.
But she didn’t pull out a weapon.
She pulled out a phone.
A live call.
Noah’s voice came through.
“Emily?”
Emily stopped breathing.
Her eyes filled instantly.
“Noah?”
A quiet laugh came from the phone.
“Hey, little sister.”
Ten years disappeared in one second.
She cried.
He cried.
Then Noah said the words they had all been waiting for.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily covered her mouth.
“Where are you?”
A pause.
Then Noah answered.
“I’m closer than you think.”
Suddenly, the lights in the facility went out.
A loud crash came from the entrance.
Someone had found them.
May you like
And this time…
they weren’t running.
