Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But Emily knew something immediately.

This was bigger than the police.

Bigger than a break-in.

Bigger than one attacker.

The person who entered the mansion wasn’t trying to steal anything.

They wanted Alexander to see the message.

They wanted Emily to see it.

She sat in the library wrapped in a blanket.

Her hands were still shaking.

Alexander stood near the window.

Watching the darkness outside.

“You should leave.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

“This isn’t safe.”

She stared at him.

“You said that before.”

“Yes.”

“And I stayed.”

“I know.”

His voice was quiet.

“That’s what worries me.”

Emily looked at him.

“Why?”

Alexander turned.

“Because everyone who gets close to my family gets hurt.”

The honesty surprised her.

For the first time, he wasn’t acting like a powerful businessman.

He was just a man carrying too much.

“My father spent his life believing he could protect everyone.”

Alexander looked down.

“He couldn’t.”

Emily studied him.

“You blame yourself.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

She didn’t expect that answer.

“You weren’t even responsible.”

“You don’t know my family.”

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“But I know guilt.”

That stopped him.

She continued.

“When Noah disappeared, I blamed myself.”

Alexander listened.

“I thought maybe I missed a sign.”

Her voice became softer.

“Maybe he tried to tell me something and I wasn’t paying attention.”

Alexander walked closer.

“Emily.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“None of this was your fault.”

The words hit her harder than expected.

Because nobody had ever said them.

Not once.

Before she could respond, Alexander’s mother entered.

She held a small box.

Emily recognized it.

“The box from the office?”

The older woman nodded.

She opened it.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

A handwritten label was attached.

EMILY — WHEN SHE IS READY.

Emily’s heart stopped.

“No.”

Alexander looked shocked.

“My father recorded that?”

His mother nodded.

They found an old tape player.

The room filled with static.

Then a man’s voice appeared.

Victor Kingston.

Emily felt frozen.

“Emily Carter.”

The voice was older.

Serious.

“If you are hearing this, it means Noah failed to keep you away from the truth.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

His father continued.

“I am sorry.”

A pause.

“I never wanted you involved.”

Emily whispered.

“What?”

Victor’s voice continued.

“Years ago, I discovered people inside my company were using innocent people for illegal experiments.”

Alexander’s face changed.

Emily looked at him.

Experiments.

The word felt impossible.

Victor continued.

“Noah found the evidence.”

Static interrupted.

Then:

“And Emily found something even more dangerous.”

The tape clicked.

Everyone froze.

“What did I find?” Emily whispered.

The recording continued.

“You found the memory.”

A sharp pain moved through Emily’s head.

Suddenly—

A flash.

A room.

A young Noah crying.

A man shouting.

Victor Kingston standing in front of her.

And Emily herself holding a small device.

She grabbed her head.

Alexander rushed to her.

“Emily!”

She gasped.

“I remember.”

Everyone froze.

She looked up.

Her face pale.

“I remember the night Noah disappeared.”

The tape kept playing.

Victor’s final words echoed.

“They will try to make you forget.”

A pause.

“But Emily Carter is the only person who saw what happened.”

The tape ended.

May you like

And Emily whispered the truth.

“I saw who took Noah.”
