Chapter 8 - THE PART THE CAMERA SAW

Ryan’s first story was that I had tripped.
His second was that I had lunged at him.
His third, according to Officer Ortiz, was that he had put out his hands to protect himself.
“What does the footage show?” I asked.
“I can tell you it’s been preserved and submitted as evidence.”
I wanted her to say he was finished.
She couldn’t.
Nobody honest could promise me that.
Mara filed for a protective order and helped me document the indirect message from Ryan’s office. She also told me to stop reading comments under the company statement.
I lasted twenty minutes.
Some people said they knew Ryan and he would never hurt anyone.
A man I had never met wrote that pregnant women could be dramatic.
One woman said she hoped the baby was safe.
I cried over that stranger’s sentence longer than I had cried over the insults.
At the hearing several days later, Ryan wore the navy suit I had bought him for our anniversary.
He looked thinner.
I hated that I noticed.
His attorney described him as a worried husband trying to support a vulnerable wife.
Then Mara introduced the text.
Think about what happens to your father if you don’t.
Ryan stared straight ahead.
The judge asked me to describe the shove.
My mouth went dry.
“I was walking away.”
“Why?”
“Because he told me to sign papers I didn’t understand.”
“What happened next?”
“He followed me outside. He said I was ruining everything. Then he pushed me.”
Across the room, Ryan shook his head.
That small movement almost worked.
For two years, that was how he told me I had remembered something wrong.
I looked at the judge instead.
“My father caught me.”
The court issued an order restricting Ryan’s contact with me. Mara explained each part afterward, including what to do if he violated it.
Outside, Ryan passed at a distance with his attorney.
He didn’t look at my face.
He looked at my stomach.
Then he smiled.

That night, someone tried to access my patient portal.
The notification showed the request had come through the recovery email Ryan had helped me set up.
