THE MAN WHO CAUGHT ME / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - WHAT HE COULDN’T HEAR

I showed Officer Ortiz the message.

She photographed it with my permission and asked me not to delete anything.

Then I opened the recording.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Dad sat beside the bed, his hands clasped between his knees.

“What’s on it, honey?”

“I don’t know how much.”

That was true.

I had started recording because Ryan had taken me into a service hallway and closed the door behind us.

I wanted proof of how he talked when nobody else could hear.

I hadn’t expected the other voice.

The recording began with shoes against tile.

Then Ryan said, “She’s asking about the trust.”

A man answered, “Then give her the papers and make her sign.”

Martin Vale.

Ryan’s business partner. The man who had toasted our marriage. The man who had called my mother’s memorial scholarship “a beautiful legacy.”

Ryan said, “Her father will notice eventually.”

“Her father already signed.”

Dad straightened.

The recording continued.

“He signed the authorization,” Martin said. “That’s what the file says.”

A pause.

Then Ryan, quieter: “And if Claire goes to him?”

“Make sure she doesn’t.”

I stopped the recording.

The room felt too small.

Dad looked at me.

“What trust?”

“The one Mom left me.”

His face emptied.

My mother had died three years earlier. Her will created a trust for me, with part of the money held until I turned thirty. Ryan had offered to help me understand the distributions.

He was good with numbers.

He reminded me of that often.

“I didn’t sign any authorization,” Dad said.

Officer Ortiz asked what kind of business Ryan and Martin ran.

“Commercial development,” I answered. “Vale Mercer Properties.”

Dad rubbed his mouth.

“They asked my company to guarantee a bridge loan last year. I said no.”

My phone vibrated in my hand.

A new message, from a number I didn’t know.

My name is Lena Brooks. I work at the Bellwether. I saw what happened. There’s something else you need to see.

Attached was a photograph.

Ryan stood in a hotel corridor with one hand around a woman’s upper arm.

A little boy stood beside her.

The boy had Ryan’s eyes.

Under the picture, Lena had written:

She told the front desk he was her husband.
