THE MAN WHO CAUGHT ME / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - WHAT MY MOTHER LEFT

The police officer photographed the envelope and took our statements.

I stood in the kitchen, one hand against my stomach, furious that Ryan had managed to make even leaving the house feel like a mistake.

Mara told me to go back with Dad while she followed up.

We left the torn papers where they could be properly documented rather than carrying everything away in a grocery bag.

That evening, Dad opened a metal file cabinet in his study.

“I might have copies.”

We searched together.

At the back of a drawer, inside an envelope marked ESTATE, we found my mother’s original records.

Her investment had been modest when she made it. Years later, the property had become valuable.

Martin’s development company wanted it.

Mom had refused to sell before she died.

There was a letter from Martin.

Then another.

Then a note in Mom’s handwriting:

Asked again. Still no. Tell Robert if he comes back.

Dad sat down hard.

“She never told me.”

“Maybe she didn’t think it mattered.”

“Maybe.”

We sent copies to Daniel.

He called the next morning.

“This explains their interest in the trust. It doesn’t prove why Ryan married you.”

I appreciated that he said it.

Because the question was already eating me alive.

Had any of it been real?

The grocery-store flowers. The late-night pancakes. The way he used to warm my feet between his legs.

I wanted a clean answer.

Instead, I had paperwork and memories I couldn’t sort.

Hannah called that afternoon.

Ryan had contacted her through someone else.

“He wants the folder back.”

“What did you say?”

“That my attorney has it.”

“Good.”

“He said he was going to take Noah.”

I heard a small voice in the background asking for juice.

Hannah lowered hers.

“I know he says things to scare people. But knowing doesn’t make it less scary.”

“No,” I said. “It doesn’t.”

We stayed on the phone while she made lunch.

No speeches. Just cabinet doors, a child talking, two women making sure the other hadn’t gone quiet.

Then Daniel sent an email asking for an urgent meeting.

The forged authorization had been used as support for a loan.

And Dad’s company had just received a demand for payment.
