Chapter 9 - THE NAME ON THE CHECK

Ethan read the message and went very still.
“What blame?” Elena asked.
He leaned against the kitchen counter. “I knew your mother was fired.”
“You told me you thought she left.”
“That’s what my mother said at first. A week later I heard Rosa had been accused of taking cash from the study.”
“She didn’t.”
“I know that now.”
“Did you believe it then?”
“I didn’t want to. I asked Dad’s lawyer about her. He told me there was a signed statement.”
Elena looked at her mother’s photographs. “There never was one.”
“I should have found her.”
“Yes,” Elena said. “You should have.”
He accepted it. That made her angrier than an excuse would have.
Mrs. Bell brought them coffee neither of them drank. At the table, the officer photographed Rosa’s note and sent copies to the detectives at the estate. Ethan called the trust’s current accountant.
The woman hesitated before answering his questions. Then she said his father’s audit had been canceled the day after the crash. Julian had taken over the trust accounts two months later. Several payments had gone to a security company that no longer existed.
“Who approved them?” Ethan asked.
“Your mother’s signature is on the forms.”
“Was she told what she was signing?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethan ended the call. “She may have spent fifteen years trying to undo what she signed.”
Elena looked again at the second cufflink. “Why send it to my building?”
“To prove Julian can reach us,” Ethan said.
“Or because he wants you to believe he has it.”
She held the cufflink beside the photograph of Ethan’s father in the garage. In the picture, his left cuff showed a flash of gold. His right sleeve was rolled up.
“One cufflink came from the car,” Elena said. “Where was this one?”
A knock sounded at the open apartment door.
Grant stood in the hallway with an officer beside him. He looked exhausted.
“The recovered message on Cole’s phone has a sender,” he said. “It came from a number assigned to me.”
Ethan stepped toward him.
“Julian copied my work phone,” Grant said. “I can prove I was in the control room when it was sent.”
“Then prove it.”
“I will. But there’s something you need to hear first. Cole didn’t know about the chandelier. His job was to make you run to Noah, then tell Julian whether you did.”

Elena felt cold. “What was Julian’s job?”
Grant met Ethan’s eyes. “He was standing at the lighting controls.”
