Chapter 4 - WHAT NOAH RECORDED

They found the red backpack in a laundry cart near the kitchen. The camera was gone.
Ethan sent Noah upstairs with Vivian and two uniformed officers. Elena watched until the boy disappeared around the corner. Then she returned to the kitchen, where staff stood in a frightened line while Grant questioned them one by one.
He looked at Elena. “You were the first person at the pyramid.”
“Yes.”
“You picked up evidence before the police arrived.”
“I picked up the cufflink.”
“And you followed Mr. Vale to the balcony after being told to stay put.”
“Because Cole warned him.”
Grant folded his arms. “You seem to know a lot about a plan you say you had nothing to do with.”
Ethan stepped between them. “Enough.”
Grant’s eyes shifted to him. “Someone had access to your family’s private rooms. Someone knew you’d run to Noah. I’m doing my job.”
Elena almost answered. Instead, she noticed the gold cufflink on the counter inside a clear evidence bag.
“That cufflink was missing for fifteen years,” Ethan said quietly. “My father wore it the night he died.”
The kitchen went still.
Ethan’s father had died in a car accident on a mountain road. Every Vale employee knew the story. Elena knew more, though she had never told Ethan why.
Her mother had worked at the estate that night. She had been dismissed the next morning and spent the rest of her life refusing to talk about the Vales.
“Elena?” Ethan asked.
Before she could speak, a young kitchen porter burst through the swinging doors.
“Mr. Vale, there’s somebody in the cold storage room.”
Julian sat on the floor between racks of flowers meant for the morning cleanup. His hands were bound with a strip torn from a tablecloth. Blood darkened one sleeve, but he was awake.
Ethan knelt. “Who did this?”
Julian swallowed. “Cole. I caught him going through Noah’s backpack.”
“Where’s the camera?”
“He took it.” Julian looked toward Grant. “He had help.”
Grant said, “Name them.”
Julian hesitated. Then his eyes found Elena.
“She knows.”
Elena stared at him. “I just found out you were here.”
Julian shook his head. “I’m talking about your mother. Tell Ethan what she saw the night our father died.”

A voice came from the kitchen doorway.
“She saw enough to get herself fired,” Vivian said.
