Chapter 1 - THE FALL

The first glass tipped while five-year-old Noah was still laughing.
Elena saw it from across the ballroom: one crystal flute sliding against another at the top of the twelve-foot pyramid. Beneath it, Noah stood beside the dessert table, reaching for a chocolate-covered strawberry.
“NOAH, MOVE!”
Music swallowed her voice.
The second glass slipped. Then the whole pyramid leaned toward him.
Elena dropped the tray in her hands and ran. Her shoes skidded on marble. She caught Noah around the waist, turned her back to the falling crystal, and drove them both beneath the heavy dessert table.
The pyramid came down like a storm.
Glass burst across the floor. Guests screamed. Someone cut the music. For one awful second, Elena heard nothing but Noah breathing against her shoulder.
“You okay?” she whispered.
He nodded. “You’re shaking.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because you scared me.”
A hand seized Elena’s arm and pulled her away.
“GET OFF MY SON!”
Ethan Vale stood over them in a black tuxedo, his face white with fear. Two security guards hurried behind him.
Elena looked at the glass scattered where Noah’s head had been. “Mr. Vale, I—”
“Dad!” Noah pushed out from under the table. “She saved me.”
Ethan let go of Elena.
The room fell quiet enough for her to hear a glass stem roll across the floor.
Noah lifted one small hand and pointed through the crowd.
“That man pushed it.”
A security guard near the ballroom doors stopped moving. He was broad-shouldered, with a dark tattoo rising above his collar. His eyes flicked from Noah to Ethan, then to the exit.
Elena followed his gaze. Something gold glinted beneath a pile of broken crystal. She picked it up carefully.
A cufflink. The Vale family crest shone on its face. On the back was a tiny portrait of Ethan, etched so finely she could make out the shape of his smile.
“I made that for my father when I was seventeen,” Ethan said.
Elena looked from the cufflink to the place where Noah had stood. “He wasn’t trying to hurt Noah.”
The tattooed guard ran.
Metal doors slammed shut before he reached them. Ethan’s head of security, Grant, stood at the wall controls.
Ethan took off his tuxedo jacket and faced the guard.
“You missed.”
The man stopped running. Then he reached inside his coat.

Every guard in the ballroom moved toward Ethan.
None of them moved toward Noah.
