Chapter 4 - EIGHT MISSING MINUTES

The recording began with Evelyn laughing.
Adrian nearly stopped it.
Her voice filled the apartment kitchen.
Alive.
Warm.
Close enough to hurt.
The recording had been made eleven days before Lily was born.
Evelyn was speaking with Marcus inside Adrian’s private library.
At first, the conversation sounded ordinary.
Then Evelyn said, “I know about North Harbor Consulting.”
Silence.
Marcus answered calmly.
“I don’t know what that is.”
“Yes, you do.”
“You moved six million dollars through it last year.”
Marcus laughed softly.
“You’ve been reading things you don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Evelyn’s voice remained steady.
“You’re stealing from Adrian.”
Another pause.
Then Marcus said something Adrian would remember forever.
“Adrian doesn’t own anything he has.”
“He inherited it.”
Evelyn replied, “That doesn’t make it yours.”
Marcus’s tone changed.
“You think you’re saving him.”
“I think he’s trying to save himself.”
“From people like me?”
“From this life.”
Marcus laughed.
“You really believe a baby changes a man like Adrian Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Then you’re more dangerous than I thought.”
The recording ended.
Grace covered her mouth.
Thomas stared at the floor.
Adrian remained still.
Elias asked, “Is that enough?”
“For what?”
“To turn Marcus over.”
Adrian looked at him.
“No.”
Elias frowned.
“You have conspiracy.”
“Fraud.”
“Threats.”
“And video placing him at the ambush.”
“He’ll say he went there after receiving an emergency call.”
“He’ll say the recording was an argument.”
“He’ll blame Victor.”
Thomas nodded.
“He’s right.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
“We need Marcus to admit what he did.”
Grace looked at him.
“And how exactly do you plan to make that happen?”
Adrian’s phone rang.
Marcus.
Adrian smiled without humor.
“He’s going to help.”
He answered.
“Marcus.”
“Where are you?”
“Busy.”
“With Thomas?”
Adrian looked at Thomas.
“You sound nervous.”
“I sound concerned.”
“Good.”
Marcus exhaled.
“What did Thomas tell you?”
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“On whether you want the truth or the version that keeps us friends.”
Silence.
Marcus finally said, “Meet me.”
“Tonight.”
“No.”
“Adrian.”
“Tomorrow.”
“Vale Tower.”
“Noon.”
“I want every senior captain there.”
Marcus’s voice sharpened.
“Why?”
“Because I’m announcing a restructuring.”
“A restructuring?”
“I’m shutting down half the old operations.”
Thomas looked at Adrian.
Adrian continued.
“I’m done raising Lily in this world.”
Nothing came from Marcus’s side of the line.
Adrian let the silence grow.
Then he said, “You knew she was alive, didn’t you?”
Marcus inhaled.
Barely.
But enough.
“Who told you that?”
Adrian ended the call.
Thomas shook his head.
“That was reckless.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at Elias.
“That was bait.”
Elias understood.
“He’ll make a move.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Adrian picked up Evelyn’s recording.
“Wherever he keeps the things he can’t afford for us to find.”
That night, Elias placed two trusted surveillance teams around Marcus’s townhouse.
At 1:17 a.m., Marcus left through the rear garage.
He drove alone.
He crossed the river.
Then entered a warehouse Adrian believed had been empty for five years.
Thomas recognized the address.
“North Harbor.”
Adrian looked at him.
“The shell company.”
“Yes.”
They waited until Marcus left.
Then Adrian, Thomas, and Elias entered.
The warehouse contained no drugs.
No weapons.
No cash.
It contained paper.
Hundreds of boxes.
Contracts.
Payroll files.
Property deeds.
Insurance records.
Marcus had built an archive of Adrian’s empire.
Elias opened one cabinet.
“Boss.”
Inside were folders labeled with names.
Judges.
Police commanders.
City inspectors.
Union officials.
Then Adrian saw one marked EVELYN HART.
He pulled it free.
The first page contained photographs.
Evelyn leaving school.
Evelyn shopping.
Evelyn at her doctor.
Evelyn entering the maternity clinic.
Marcus had been watching her for months.
Adrian’s hand trembled.
Thomas opened another folder.
“Adrian.”
Inside were diagrams of the service road.
Vehicle positions.
Timing charts.
And a typed document.
OPERATION WINTER.
Primary objective: Remove E.H.
Secondary objective: Remove infant heir.
Tertiary objective: Attribute attack to Mercer organization.
Adrian stared at the words.
No doubt remained.
Marcus had planned everything.
Then Elias found another file.
This one carried Adrian’s name.
Inside was a photograph of Adrian entering Evelyn’s memorial earlier that day.
Attached beneath it was a handwritten note.
PHASE TWO AFTER FUNERAL.
Elias looked at Adrian.
“What’s phase two?”
Thomas suddenly went pale.
He pulled another page from the folder.
A photograph of Grace.
A photograph of Emma.
A photograph of the yellow house.
And underneath them, one sentence.
IF THE CHILD SURVIVED, USE THE WOMAN.
Adrian reached for his phone.
Grace answered immediately.
“Adrian?”
“Take Lily.”
“Take Emma.”
“Leave the apartment now.”
Grace’s voice changed.
“Why?”
A loud crash came through the phone.
May you like
Then Emma screamed.
The line went dead.
