Chapter 12 - WHAT THE CITY LEARNED

The arrests began before sunrise.

Victor Sloane was found in Toronto two days later.

Three Vale Security supervisors were taken into custody.

Two police officers resigned before investigators reached them.

A city inspector disappeared for forty-eight hours, then surrendered with an attorney.

The North Harbor accounts were frozen.

The St. Catherine’s records were seized.

Marcus’s archive exposed years of bribery, theft, intimidation, and blackmail.

Some of it belonged to Marcus.

Some of it belonged to Adrian’s father.

And some of it belonged to Adrian himself.

That was the part everyone expected him to hide.

He did not.

Elias found him in the Vale Tower office three mornings later.

Boxes covered the room.

“What are you doing?”

“Finishing it.”

“Finishing what?”

Adrian looked around.

“My father’s business.”

Elias frowned.

“You can shut down Marcus’s side.”

“This is bigger than Marcus.”

Adrian opened an old ledger.

“There are things in here I knew about.”

“Things I allowed.”

“People I frightened because fear was easier than trust.”

Elias said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“I can’t tell Lily Marcus was evil and pretend I was clean because I didn’t order the ambush.”

“What happens now?”

“Legitimate businesses stay.”

“Anything built on coercion closes.”

“And the authorities?”

“They get what they need.”

Elias looked surprised.

“That may cost you.”

“I know.”

“How much?”

Adrian looked toward a photograph of Evelyn.

“Less than I’ve already paid.”

Grace entered with Lily.

Emma followed holding her rabbit.

Lily reached toward Adrian.

He immediately took her.

Elias smiled faintly.

“You’re getting good at that.”

“No.”

Grace corrected him.

“He still holds her like she’s a priceless vase.”

Adrian looked offended.

“She’s eight months old.”

“She bends.”

“Barely.”

Grace laughed.

It was the first normal sound Adrian had heard in days.

Emma climbed into the chair beside him.

“Is Uncle Marcus bad?”

The room went quiet.

Grace started to answer.

Adrian stopped her gently.

“He did bad things.”

Emma looked at him.

“Is he going to jail?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

“Maybe a very long time.”

Emma thought about that.

“Good.”

Then she held out her rabbit.

“He doesn’t like bad men.”

Adrian nodded seriously.

“Smart rabbit.”

The legal case became public within a week.

Chicago newspapers called it the Vale Betrayal.

Television crews camped outside Vale Tower.

Reporters shouted questions about Adrian’s organization.

About Marcus.

About Evelyn.

About the infant everyone believed had died.

Adrian refused to show Lily’s face publicly.

But he issued one statement.

“My daughter is alive.”

“Her mother was killed as part of a conspiracy carried out by people I trusted.”

“I will cooperate fully with investigators.”

“No child should inherit the consequences of a life she did not choose.”

The statement shocked everyone who knew Adrian.

Some called it weakness.

Others called it strategy.

Adrian did not care.

He knew what Evelyn would call it.

Late.

But necessary.

Grant Mercer kept his agreement.

He testified.

In return, investigators examined his own organization too.

Grant hated that part.

Adrian considered it fair.

Thomas entered witness protection temporarily.

He refused money.

Adrian offered anyway.

Thomas finally accepted one thing.

A job.

Not with security.

Not with the organization.

With a foundation Adrian was creating in Evelyn’s name.

Thomas looked at the paperwork.

“What exactly would I do?”

“Keep children safe.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“That I can do.”

Grace received an offer too.

She read it twice.

“Director of family services?”

“You kept my daughter alive for eight months.”

“I think you can manage a building.”

Grace looked at the salary.

Then at Adrian.

“This is too much.”

“No.”

“It isn’t enough.”

She folded the paper.

“There’s one condition.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“I choose my own office.”

“Fine.”

“And Emma gets to visit.”

“Fine.”

“And you stop acting like you’re doing me a favor.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

“Learn how diapers work.”

Adrian looked down at Lily.

“I have people for that.”

Grace stared at him.

Adrian sighed.

“Fine.”

That evening, he changed his first diaper.

It went badly.

May you like

Emma laughed so hard she fell against the couch.

For the first time since Evelyn died, Adrian laughed too.
