Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY WHITE COFFIN

Eight weeks later, Adrian returned to the cemetery.
He came without security.
Without a convoy.
Without black cars waiting at the gate.
Lily slept against his chest in a small carrier.
Grace walked beside him.
Emma carried three white lilies.
Thomas followed several steps behind.
Evelyn’s grave appeared beneath an old maple tree.
Beside it stood the smaller stone.
LILY VALE.
BELOVED DAUGHTER.
Adrian stopped.
For eight months, he had stood before that stone believing his child rested beneath it.
Now Lily breathed softly against his heart.
Grace asked, “Are you ready?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at Evelyn’s grave.
“But I’m doing it anyway.”
Workers had already removed the empty white coffin that morning.
The hospital blanket.
The pink cap.
The engraved bracelet.
Adrian had kept them.
Not as burial objects.
As Lily’s.
The small headstone was lifted from the ground.
Emma watched.
“Where are they taking baby Lily’s rock?”
Adrian crouched.
“Because Lily doesn’t need a grave.”
Emma nodded.
“She needs a bedroom.”
“Yes.”
“A yellow one.”
Adrian smiled.
“Probably.”
Emma placed her flowers beside Evelyn.
One for Evelyn.
One for Daniel Reed.
One for Thomas, because Emma misunderstood why adults had told her he almost died.
Thomas accepted this logic.
Adrian remained beside Evelyn after the others walked away.
He adjusted Lily against his chest.
“You were right.”
The wind moved softly through the trees.
“I hate when that happens.”
Lily stirred.
Adrian looked down.
“She has your smile.”
“And your ability to ignore me.”
He swallowed.
“I heard your recording.”
“I heard all of it.”
His voice grew quieter.
“I don’t know if I can become the man you thought I could be.”
“But I know what I don’t want to be anymore.”
Lily opened her eyes.
Adrian touched her cheek.
“I won’t make her carry my father’s debts.”
“Or mine.”
He looked at Evelyn’s name.
“And I won’t teach her that love means owning people.”
For several moments, Adrian simply stood there.
Then he removed Evelyn’s silver lily necklace from his pocket.
He had considered burying it.
Instead, he put it back into his pocket.
One day, it would belong to Lily.
Not because it was evidence.
Because it had belonged to her mother.
As Adrian turned away, Thomas approached.
“There’s something you should know.”
Adrian stopped.
Thomas held an envelope.
“This was stored with Evelyn’s final medical records.”
“They released it yesterday.”
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a handwritten page.
Evelyn’s handwriting.
Uneven.
Weak.
But hers.
Adrian,
If someone gives you this, I probably did not get to come home.
First, breathe.
Yes, I know you hate when I tell you that.
Second, find Lily.
If she is safe, do not spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for the minutes you weren’t there.
You cannot stand beside everyone you love every second.
Love is not surveillance.
Love is building a life where they can breathe even when you are not in the room.
If Lily grows up without me, tell her I wanted her before I knew her.
Tell her I loved the way she kicked whenever you spoke because apparently she already enjoyed arguing with you.
Tell her she was named for something beautiful that survives winter.
Then do one thing for me.
Survive it too.
Adrian lowered the letter.
Thomas looked away to give him privacy.
Adrian pressed the page against his chest.
Lily made a soft sound.
He kissed her forehead.
“All right.”
May you like
He looked once more at Evelyn’s grave.
“I will.”
