Chapter 6 - THE NAME IN THE OLD FAMILY PORTRAIT

Dominic grabbed Nathan by the collar.
âInherited what?â
Nathan looked at him.
âAccess.â
âTo what?â
âEverything.â
Daniel moved closer.
Nathan did not resist.
He only said,
âGo to the portrait gallery.â
Dominicâs grip tightened.
âWhose portrait?â
âYour motherâs.â
For the first time that night, Dominic hesitated.
His mother had died nine years earlier.
Isabella Vale.
Elegant.
Cold.
Brilliant.
The only person Dominic had ever feared disappointing.
âWhat about her?â
Nathan closed his eyes.
âBehind the frame.â
Dominic released him.
Daniel restrained Nathan.
Marcus escorted him upstairs.
Dominic went directly to the portrait gallery.
Mia met him there.
Harper was asleep in Elenaâs room under guard.
Mia watched his face.
âWhat happened?â
âNathan says thereâs something behind my motherâs portrait.â
They approached the massive oil painting.
Isabella Vale looked down from the wall in a dark blue gown.
Dominic remembered being eight years old while she sat for the artist.
She had hated every second of it.
Daniel removed the frame.
Behind it was a narrow wall safe.
Dominic stared.
He had never known it existed.
A four-digit keypad waited beside the handle.
Mia studied him.
âYou know the code?â
Dominic thought of his mother.
Her birthday would be obvious.
His fatherâs death.
His own birthday.
Too obvious.
Then he remembered what she used to say whenever he lost his temper as a boy.
Control before power.
Four words.
Four numbers?
No.
Then he remembered the family crest.
Founded 1912.
He entered 1912.
The safe opened.
Inside sat one envelope.
One key.
And a cassette recorder.
Dominic removed the envelope.
His name was written across the front.
In his motherâs handwriting.
DOMINIC.
His hands stopped.
Mia noticed.
âYou donât have to open it now.â
âYes.â
He broke the seal.
The letter inside was nine years old.
Dominic read.
My son,
If you are reading this, then someone has finally found what your father and I spent years trying to bury.
There is a part of the Vale organization you were never meant to inherit.
Your father called it Shepherd.
Not a person.
A system.
Dominic looked up sharply.
Nathan had lied.
Or misunderstood.
He continued.
Shepherd was designed during the worst years of our familyâs history.
It used hidden companies, false names, political leverage, and private accounts to protect the family if everything collapsed.
Your uncle Sebastian helped build it.
Later, he tried to take it.
Your father stopped him.
But we never destroyed Shepherd.
We should have.
Dominicâs pulse slowed.
Mia sat beside him.
He kept reading.
Only four people knew the full system.
Your father.
Sebastian.
Me.
And Nathan Crossâs father, Samuel.
Dominic stopped.
Nathanâs father.
Samuel Cross had served the Vale family for thirty years.
He died when Nathan was twenty-one.
At least that was what Dominic had always believed.
The next paragraph changed everything.
Samuel Cross did not die in the boating accident reported publicly.
He disappeared after attempting to sell access to Shepherd.
Your father allowed the world to believe he was dead.
I do not know whether Samuel survived.
But if Shepherd ever returns, assume someone found his records.
Trust actions, not blood.
Dominic lowered the letter.
Mia whispered,
âSamuel Cross.â
Dominic nodded.
Nathanâs father.
The man Dominic remembered as a second uncle.
A man who supposedly drowned eighteen years ago.
Daniel entered.
âWe searched Nathan.â
Dominic handed him the letter.
Daniel read quickly.
Then looked up.
âIf Samuel is aliveâŠâ
Dominicâs phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Silence.
Then an older man spoke.
âHello, Dominic.â
Dominic did not breathe.
The voice was deeper than on the recording.
But clearer.
Familiar.
Some memories never disappeared.
Dominic had heard that voice at birthday dinners.
At Christmas.
Beside his fatherâs grave.
âSamuel.â
A soft laugh answered.
âYour mother always was smarter than everyone else.â
Dominic looked toward Nathan being held across the hallway.
Nathanâs face went white when he heard the name.
Dominic understood.
Nathan had not been protecting Claire.
He had been protecting someone much closer.
His father.
Samuel Cross continued.
âYou found Mia.â
âYes.â
âThat was unfortunate.â
Dominicâs eyes became ice.
âFor you.â
Samuel laughed again.
âNo, son.â
Nathan flinched at the word.
Samuel continued.
âFor Nathan.â
Dominic watched his oldest friend.
Then Samuel said,
âBecause now youâre going to make him choose between the family he was born intoâŠâ
May you like
A pause.
âAnd the family he chose.â
