Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT SECRETS

The investigation lasted months.
Dominicâs name appeared in newspapers.
On television.
Across financial sites.
Some called him a crime boss finally exposed.
Others called him the key witness who dismantled a hidden network that had operated for decades.
The truth was less convenient.
Dominic was neither innocent nor the monster Samuel had tried to manufacture.
He was a man who had inherited power.
Used it.
Protected it.
And finally understood what it had cost.
Several Vale companies were frozen.
Three were dissolved.
Two executives were arrested.
A judge resigned.
A doctor admitted accepting money to falsify Dominicâs future diagnosis.
More names followed.
Shepherd collapsed piece by piece.
Claire faced charges for conspiracy, fraud, unlawful confinement, and a long list of financial crimes.
Samuel faced more.
Nathan cooperated.
His testimony dismantled the remaining network.
It did not erase what he had done.
He never asked it to.
Mia gave her own statement.
She refused every attempt to minimize what had happened to her.
Especially Nathanâs role.
âHe may have kept me alive.â
She told investigators.
âHe also tied my hands and left my daughter without her mother.â
Both things could be true.
That became a lesson Dominic carried with him.
People were rarely only one thing.
Six months after the night in the cellar, Dominic stood in the mansion foyer while construction workers removed the old hidden panels.
Every secret passage was being mapped.
Every locked room opened.
Every forgotten chamber inspected.
Mia approached holding a clipboard.
Dominic looked at it.
âYou enjoy this too much.â
âI spent three years cleaning rooms nobody bothered to label.â
She pointed toward the builders.
âThis is revenge.â
Dominic smiled faintly.
Mia had refused to return as a maid.
Dominic had expected that.
He offered her enough money to leave the Hudson Valley forever.
She refused that too.
Then she surprised him.
âI want a job.â
Dominic had stared at her.
âYou already had one.â
âNo.â
She shook her head.
âI want one where people listen when I speak.â
So Dominic made her director of estate operations.
Not out of pity.
Mia would have rejected that.
She earned the position within two weeks.
Half the staff feared her.
The other half adored her.
Dominic considered that healthy.
Harper adapted faster than everyone.
The nightmares slowly faded.
She stopped asking if Mia would disappear whenever she went downstairs.
The yellow nightgown was thrown away.
Harper insisted on doing it herself.
One afternoon, Dominic found her sitting on the grand staircase drawing.
He sat two steps below her.
âWhat is that?â
âMy house.â
Dominic looked at the picture.
It was the Vale mansion.
Sort of.
The windows were purple.
The roof was green.
A giant sun occupied half the page.
Three figures stood outside.
Harper.
Mia.
Dominic.
He pointed toward himself.
âWhy am I so tall?â
âYouâre bossy.â
âThat doesnât answer the question.â
âIt does to me.â
Dominic nodded.
Fair enough.
He pointed toward the empty space beside them.
âWhereâs everyone else?â
Harper kept coloring.
âMiss Elena is cooking.â
âMr. Daniel is yelling at guards.â
Accurate.
Dominic hesitated.
âWhat about Nathan?â
Harperâs crayon stopped.
She looked at him.
âIs he bad?â
Dominic considered lying.
Instead he said,
âHe did bad things.â
Harper frowned.
âIs that the same?â
Dominic looked at the child who had started everything with one whispered truth.
âNo.â
Her eyes became curious.
âWhat happens to him?â
âHe has to answer for what he did.â
âWill you ever be friends again?â
Dominic looked toward the open front doors.
âI donât know.â
Harper accepted that.
Children often handled uncertainty better than adults.
She returned to coloring.
Then asked,
âAre you going to marry Miss Claire?â
Dominic stared at her.
Harper looked completely serious.
âNo.â
âGood.â
âWhy?â
âShe was mean.â
Dominic almost laughed.
Months of conspiracies.
Millions stolen.
A hidden empire.
Kidnapping.
Fraud.
And Harper had reduced Claire Bennett to the simplest possible truth.
She was mean.
Dominic stood.
Harper grabbed his sleeve.
Exactly as she had the night he returned home.
This time she was smiling.
âMr. Vale?â
âYes?â
âMommy says dinner is ready.â
Dominic looked toward the dining room.
Once, staff ate separately.
That had been tradition.
Dominic had ended it.
Not every employee joined him.
Most preferred their own space.
But Mia and Harper did.
So did Daniel and Elena when they were free.
May you like
The table had become smaller.
Strangely, the house felt larger.
