Chapter 12 - DOMINIC BURNED THE EMPIRE BEFORE THEY COULD TAKE IT

By sunrise, Samuel Cross and Claire Bennett were in separate secured rooms.
Not cells.
Dominic was not a police officer.
But he had already made the call.
The one his father never would have made.
The one Samuel never expected.
Dominic contacted federal authorities.
Daniel stared at him after he ended the call.
âYou know what theyâll find.â
âYes.â
âNot just Samuelâs crimes.â
âI know.â
âYour records too.â
Dominic looked toward the boxes from Shepherd.
âI know.â
Nathan stood near the doorway.
His wrists were no longer restrained.
Daniel hated that.
Dominic had made the decision anyway.
Mia entered.
Harper was sleeping upstairs.
Finally.
Mia looked at the files.
âYouâre giving them everything?â
âYes.â
She studied him.
âYou could destroy the parts that hurt you.â
âYes.â
âBut you wonât.â
âNo.â
Nathan laughed quietly.
Samuel, under guard across the room, heard it.
âYou fool.â
Dominic looked toward him.
Samuel continued.
âYour father built an empire so you would never kneel to anyone.â
Dominic walked closer.
âMy father built a cage.â
Samuel smiled.
âYou benefited from it.â
âYes.â
That silenced the room.
Dominic did not pretend innocence.
He had made brutal choices.
He had frightened people.
He had built companies using leverage most businessmen would never admit existed.
Some lines he had never crossed.
Others he had stood close enough to see clearly.
Dominic looked around Shepherdâs archive.
âMaybe this was always going to end one way.â
Samuel shook his head.
âYou can still win.â
Dominic almost smiled.
âYou still think winning means keeping everything.â
âWhat else could it mean?â
Dominic looked toward Mia.
Her bandaged wrists.
Then toward the ceiling where Harper slept.
âIt means knowing what isnât worth becoming.â
Samuelâs face filled with disgust.
âWeak.â
Dominic turned away.
At 8:42 a.m., black government SUVs approached the Vale estate.
Daniel watched them through the security feed.
âTheyâre here.â
Dominic nodded.
Nathan moved beside him.
âWhat happens to me?â
âYou tell the truth.â
Nathan laughed once.
âThatâs new.â
âYes.â
Dominic looked at him.
âIt will probably hurt.â
âIt should.â
Dominic studied his oldest friend.
âWhy did you help Samuel?â
Nathan answered honestly.
âBecause part of me hated that everything I had came from being beside you.â
Dominic stayed silent.
Nathan continued.
âYou walked into rooms and people knew your name.â
âI was always Nathan Cross.â
âDominic Valeâs friend.â
âDominic Valeâs partner.â
âDominic Valeâs shadow.â
âSo when my father told me I deserved my own empireâŠâ
âYou believed him.â
âI wanted to.â
Dominic nodded.
That answer, more than excuses, finally sounded real.
Nathan swallowed.
âIâm sorry.â
Dominic looked at him.
âI know.â
Nathan waited.
There was no forgiveness.
Not yet.
Maybe never.
But there was truth.
For now, that had to be enough.
The federal agents entered.
Boxes were sealed.
Computers were photographed.
Samuel was taken first.
He looked at Nathan one final time.
Nathan did not look back.
Claire came next.
She stopped in front of Dominic.
Her wedding ring still glittered on her finger.
Engagement ring.
Dominic corrected himself.
There would be no wedding.
Claire lifted her hand.
âYou want this back?â
Dominic looked at the diamond.
âNo.â
Her eyes narrowed.
âWhy?â
âKeep it.â
Claire gave a bitter smile.
âSentimental?â
âNo.â
Dominic stepped closer.
âEvidence.â
For the first time since he had known her, Claire had nothing to say.
Agents escorted her away.
Nathan went voluntarily.
Before getting into the vehicle, he looked toward Dominic.
âSeventeen years.â
Dominic nodded.
Nathan swallowed.
âWere any of them real?â
The question mirrored the one he had asked Claire.
Dominic answered immediately.
âYes.â
Nathan closed his eyes.
That answer hurt more than hatred would have.
Then he got into the vehicle.
And left.
Dominic stood beneath the mansion entrance as the convoy disappeared.
Mia came beside him.
âYou just handed away half your life.â
Dominic looked at her.
âNo.â
May you like
Then toward Harper watching from the upstairs window.
âI handed away the part that was already dead.â
