Chapter 3 - ROBERT LANGFORD DOESN’T LOSE

By sunrise, Robert Langford had already rewritten the story.
Every major local news site carried some version of the same headline.
BILLIONAIRE PHILANTHROPIST ATTACKED BY HOTEL EMPLOYEE.
There was no mention of Jessica screaming.
No mention of bruises.
No mention of Robert’s hand in her hair.
Only Colleen.
Her employee photograph appeared beside words like unstable, violent, and disgruntled.
Maya stared at the television.
“They work fast.”
Jessica looked sick.
“Robert owns advertising contracts with half these networks.”
Colleen’s phone rang.
Walter Pierce.
She answered.
“What?”
Walter sounded nervous.
“Colleen, listen to me carefully.”
“You fired me.”
“I know.”
“You threatened to have me arrested.”
“I know.”
“So make this good.”
Walter lowered his voice.
“There was security footage.”
Colleen straightened.
“From inside the suite?”
“No. Hallway camera.”
“Then it shows me hearing the scream and going in.”
“Yes.”
“And Jessica leaving with me.”
“Yes.”
“So release it.”
Silence.
“Walter?”
“It’s gone.”
Colleen closed her eyes.
“Gone how?”
“Someone accessed the server at 3:14 this morning.”
“Robert?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn't have to.”
Walter whispered, “There’s something else.”
“What?”
“The camera recorded another person entering the service corridor ten minutes before you reached the suite.”
“Who?”
“I couldn't see the face.”
“Then why does it matter?”
“Because that person used a master hotel key.”
Walter paused.
“A key only six people have.”
Colleen glanced at Jessica.
“Send me the footage.”
“I can’t.”
“Walter—”
“I copied eight seconds before the file disappeared.”
Colleen’s anger faded.
“You saved it?”
“Yes.”
“Send it.”
A file arrived seconds later.
Colleen played it.
A tall figure in a dark coat moved down the service hall.
The face was hidden.
The figure stopped at the penthouse door.
Reached into a pocket.
Used a master key.
Then turned slightly toward the camera.
Jessica gasped.
“Pause it.”
Colleen froze the image.
Jessica leaned closer.
The person wore a distinctive silver ring.
A snake wrapped around a black stone.
Jessica sat down hard.
“No.”
“You know that ring?”
Jessica didn’t answer.
“Jessica.”
“That belongs to Robert’s brother.”
“His brother was at the hotel?”
Jessica looked terrified.
“Daniel has been dead for seventeen years.”
Maya stared at her.
Colleen replayed the clip.
The ring gleamed beneath the hallway light.
Then a soft knock came from the front door upstairs.
Everyone froze.
A man’s voice called from outside.
“Colleen?”
She knew that voice.
May you like
Her father had been dead for twenty-one years.
But the voice on the other side sounded exactly like him.
