Chapter 1 - THE SCREAM BEHIND THE PENTHOUSE DOOR

The first scream stopped Colleen Hayes in the middle of the hallway.
The second made her drop the stack of towels in her arms.
“PLEASE! ROBERT, STOP!”
Colleen didn’t call the front desk.
She didn’t wait for security.
She grabbed the wooden-handled industrial mop from her cleaning cart and ran straight toward the presidential suite.
The door was cracked open.
Inside, a crystal lamp shattered against the wall.
Colleen shoved the door wide.
And froze.
A woman in a cream bathrobe was on her knees beside the couch.
Strawberry-blonde hair covered half her face.
A man in a charcoal suit had one fist buried in that hair.
He jerked her head backward.
“You think you can humiliate me?” he hissed.
“Robert, please—”
“You leave when I say you leave.”
Colleen’s stomach twisted.
She knew that tone.
Her father had used it on her mother years ago.
That soft, controlled voice men used when they believed nobody could stop them.
“Let her go.”
The man turned.
His eyes landed on Colleen’s dark-blue maid uniform.
For half a second, he looked confused.
Then amused.
“Get out.”
Colleen tightened both hands around the mop.
“I said let her go.”
His face hardened.
“You have no idea who you're talking to.”
“No.”
Colleen stepped closer.
“But I know exactly what I’m looking at.”
The woman whispered, “Please don’t make him angrier.”
Robert yanked her hair again.
She screamed.
Colleen swung.
The mop handle cracked across Robert’s cheek.
His grip broke instantly.
He staggered sideways.
His heel caught the edge of a Persian rug.
Then one of the most powerful businessmen in the city crashed flat onto his back.
Silence.
Colleen stood over him, breathing hard.
The woman stared at her.
Robert touched his cheek.
When he saw blood on his fingertips, something monstrous entered his expression.
“You stupid little bitch.”
Colleen raised the mop again.
“Stay down.”
Footsteps thundered in the hall.
Security poured into the suite, followed by the Grand Plaza’s general manager, Walter Pierce.
Walter took one look at Robert.
Then at Colleen.
His face drained of color.
“Oh, God.”
Robert pushed himself upright.
“Fire her.”
Walter swallowed.
“Mr. Langford—”
“I said fire her.”
Walter turned toward Colleen.
“You’re terminated effective immediately.”
Colleen stared at him.
“You didn't even ask what happened.”
“I don’t need to.”
Robert smiled through his swollen lip.
“Call the police.”
Two guards moved toward Colleen.
Then the woman stood.
Her knees were shaking.
Her voice wasn’t.
“If anyone touches her, I’ll tell every reporter in Manhattan why she hit him.”
Robert slowly turned.
“Jessica.”
Jessica Langford faced her husband.
And for the first time all night, Robert looked afraid.
Jessica reached for Colleen’s hand.
“Come with me.”
Robert’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“If you walk through that door, Jessica, you lose everything.”
Jessica stopped.
Then she looked over her shoulder.
“No, Robert.”
Her eyes were wet, but steady.
“I think you do.”
She pulled Colleen into the hallway.
May you like
Neither woman noticed the small black camera above the penthouse door rotate quietly after them.
Someone had been watching everything.
