Chapter 14 - THE MAN BEHIND ROBERT

Senator Charles Vance had spent three days calling Robert Langford “a disgrace to American business.”

He appeared on every network.

Promised transparency.

Demanded justice.

He was also Robert’s oldest business partner.

Ethan found the evidence inside Evelyn’s tape.

After Evelyn’s recorded statement came thirty seconds of footage she hadn’t intended to capture.

Two young men walked onto the terrace after George fell.

Robert.

And Charles Vance.

Vance looked down at George’s body.

Then at Robert.

He said one sentence.

“We fix this now, or we both lose everything.”

That sentence changed the entire case.

Ethan copied the tape to six secure servers.

Jessica gave federal prosecutors the financial records.

Daniel provided twenty-five years of documents.

Colleen gave her statement.

Then Senator Vance went on television and called the tape “a sophisticated fabrication.”

“He’s going to bury it,” Maya said.

“Not if we bury him first,” Ethan replied.

Three days later, Vance held a press conference at City Hall.

Colleen stood outside with Jessica.

Hundreds of reporters waited.

Vance approached the podium.

“My fellow citizens—”

Ethan’s team hijacked the media feed.

The giant screen behind Vance flickered.

Evelyn Hayes appeared.

Twenty-five years younger.

Terrified.

But determined.

“My name is Evelyn Hayes.”

Colleen’s breath caught.

The crowd fell silent.

“I witnessed the death of George Langford.”

Vance spun toward the screen.

“TURN THAT OFF!”

Nobody did.

Evelyn described everything.

Robert.

George.

The terrace.

The threats.

Then came the accidental footage.

Young Charles Vance appeared.

We fix this now, or we both lose everything.

Chaos erupted.

Reporters shouted.

Federal agents moved toward the stage.

Vance tried to leave.

Jessica stepped into his path.

“You ruined families for twenty-five years.”

Vance glared at her.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

Jessica smiled.

“I just finally stopped protecting men like you.”

Agents handcuffed him.

Cameras flashed.

Across the city, Robert watched from a detention center.

His political protection disappeared in real time.

Within hours, prosecutors added conspiracy, witness intimidation, financial fraud, and obstruction charges.

Colleen returned to Ethan’s office after midnight.

Everyone celebrated.

Everyone except Daniel.

He stood by the window.

“What’s wrong?”

Daniel handed Colleen one final document.

“I found this in Robert’s private archive.”

She opened it.

It was a death certificate.

Evelyn Hayes.

Cause of death: automobile accident.

Colleen frowned.

“I know how my mother died.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed to a police evidence number.

“I checked.”

Colleen stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Your mother’s crash wasn’t an accident.”

On the final page was authorization for a payment made forty-eight hours before Evelyn died.

Approved by Robert Langford.

Colleen went completely still.

May you like

Robert hadn’t merely taken her father away.

He had murdered her mother.
