Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE A DIFFERENT LIFE

The next forty-eight hours changed everything.

Victor Russo lost his companies.

His accounts were frozen.

His name became a headline.

The man who once controlled entire rooms suddenly became the person everyone wanted to destroy.

But Chloe noticed something strange.

Victor wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t desperate.

He wasn’t broken.

He was calm.

“You’re not scared?” she asked.

Victor looked out the window.

“I am.”

That answer surprised her.

“You are?”

“Yes.”

“Then why do you look like you already won?”

Victor turned.

“Because I finally know what matters.”

Chloe looked away.

For years, Victor had believed power was survival.

Now he understood something different.

Power without people was just loneliness with expensive furniture.

Chloe refused to leave.

Victor argued.

“You should go somewhere safe.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“This isn’t your fight.”

“Yes, it is.”

“Chloe.”

She looked directly at him.

“You protected me when I had nothing.”

A pause.

“Now I’m staying when you have nothing.”

Victor stared.

Nobody had ever chosen him when he had nothing to offer.

Nobody.

Meanwhile, Victor’s remaining allies searched for proof.

Not to save his empire.

To reveal the truth.

Because Dominic had made one mistake.

He underestimated loyalty.

The same thing Victor had spent years believing didn’t exist.

One by one, people came forward.

Former employees.

Old friends.

People who remembered the real Victor.

Not the monster created by rumors.

But the man who quietly helped families.

The man who protected workers.

The man who paid hospital bills without taking credit.

The truth began spreading.

Then came the final piece.

A hidden recording.

Richard Hale’s voice.

Admitting everything.

The murders.

The manipulation.

The lies.

And Dominic’s involvement.

Victor listened silently.

Chloe watched his face.

She expected anger.

Instead, she saw sadness.

“They were my family.”

Her heart broke.

Because revenge was easy.

Grieving was harder.

That night, Dominic escaped.

But he left a message.

A location.

An invitation.

A final confrontation.

Victor knew it was a trap.

Chloe knew too.

“You’re going.”

“Yes.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“Victor.”

“This time, I protect you.”

She stepped closer.

“And who protects you?”

He had no answer.

Because the truth was simple.

For years, Victor had protected everyone.

But nobody had protected him.

Until Chloe.

At the abandoned warehouse where everything began, Dominic waited.

“You came.”

Victor looked around.

“You knew I would.”

“Yes.”

Dominic smiled.

“Because you’re still predictable.”

Victor looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m here because I’m done running from the past.”

Dominic raised his weapon.

“You think she changed you?”

Victor looked toward Chloe.

“Yes.”

Then back at Dominic.

“And that’s why you lost.”

The gunshot came suddenly.

But this time…

Victor wasn’t the only one prepared.

Because Chloe had discovered something Dominic never expected.

She wasn’t just the woman Victor protected.

She was the person who knew him best.

May you like

And she knew exactly where Dominic would run.
