Chapter 8 - A Story Built on Silence

Beatrice didn’t deny signing.

“Elena asked me to.

The boys kept slipping into the garden.”

Dante laid the maintenance sheet on the desk.

“Then why wasn’t there an emergency release?”

“There should have been.

Ask the contractor.”

“I will.”

“You’re letting a nanny turn a tragedy into a conspiracy.”

Marina stood near the open door.

She hadn’t wanted to be in the room.

Dante had asked her to stay because Miguel trusted her and because she had found the tag.

Now Beatrice pointed at her.

“She’s been here less than a week.”

“That doesn’t make the paperwork less real,” Dante said.

Beatrice’s eyes filled with tears.

“You weren’t here that night.”

The room went silent.

Dante’s face changed.

There it was.

The weapon she knew exactly how to use.

“No,” he said.

“I wasn’t.”

“You were doing whatever mattered more.”

Marina saw his hands curl.

Then, slowly, he opened them.

“That’s mine to live with.

It doesn’t answer my question.”

Beatrice left without another word.

That evening, Dante found Marina on the back steps.

“Your brother,” he said carefully.

“Rosa mentioned him.”

“She shouldn’t have.”

“I asked why the alarm frightened you.

She only said you lost someone.”

Marina watched a moth circle the porch light.

“His name was Lucas.

He was nineteen.”

Dante waited.

“The building caught fire.

He helped me get Sofia outside.

Then he went back for our neighbor.”

“Did they—”

“No.”

She rubbed her palms against her jeans.

“Sofia was three.

For months, she slept holding his old stuffed rabbit.

When I saw that doll in the dark, everything got mixed together.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

A long silence passed.

Then Dante said, “I was at a meeting when Elena called.

I silenced the phone.”

Marina looked at him.

“I called back twelve minutes later.”

There was nothing useful she could say to twelve minutes.

So she stayed beside him.

Inside, Gabriel’s voice rose from the playroom.

“I told you it was on there!”

They found him holding an old tablet.

“I used to record magic tricks on Mom’s tablet,” he explained.

“I thought there might be videos.”

On the screen, a blurry image showed the west hallway.

A woman’s voice said, “You can’t take that money and expect me to stay quiet.”

Elena.

Another voice answered.

May you like

“You don’t understand what you’re about to ruin.”

Beatrice.
