Chapter 12 - The Night She Stopped Running

Marina locked the apartment door.
Then she called Dante.
She didn’t waste time pretending she could handle it alone.
Within an hour, she and Sofia were somewhere secure, the message had been preserved, and a police officer was taking her statement.
Sofia slept curled beside her, one hand tucked under Marina’s sweater.
“Do you know who sent it?” the officer asked.
“I have a suspicion.
I don’t have proof.”
Dante, standing by the window, looked at her.
She held his gaze.
Suspicion had already done enough damage in that family.
She wasn’t going to dress it up as certainty.
By morning, there was proof of something else.
The contractor who had replaced the service-door lock agreed to speak.
Beatrice had rejected the emergency-release hardware because it was visible from the sitting room.
He had warned her that the door needed to open from inside without a key.
She had signed the refusal.
The investigator also found an old email from Elena demanding that the lock be changed.
It had been sent the afternoon she died.
Dante read it in silence.
Then he set the phone down very carefully.
“She knew.”
“She was trying to fix it,” Marina said.
He pressed both hands flat against the table.
“The police need all of it.”
“They’ll get it.”
At the mansion, the boys began meeting with a child counselor.
Marina wasn’t in the sessions.
Afterward, Rafael told her they had drawn pictures of feelings.
“I made mad purple.”
“Good color.”
“Gabriel made his black.”
“Also allowed.”
“Miguel didn’t draw.”
“He doesn’t have to do everything at the same speed.”
That evening, Miguel brought Marina a picture.
A rectangle.
A yellow shape.
Two stick figures.
“Is this a house?” she asked.
“The room.”
She waited.
“This is Mom.
This is Aunt Bea.”
Marina kept her face still.
“Do you want to tell me about it?”
Miguel shook his head.
“Okay.”
He touched the yellow shape.
“She dropped the lamp when they pulled the bag.”
Marina’s pulse jumped.
She didn’t ask him to explain more.
Instead, she called Dante and the counselor.
Miguel watched her, suddenly frightened.
“Did I do something bad?”
“No.”
“Then why do you look like that?”
May you like
Marina knelt and took his small hand.
“Because you’ve been holding something heavy for a very long time.”
