Chapter 11 - The Woman Behind the Joke

The next morning, Marina nearly left.

She packed while Sofia sat on the bed, carefully matching socks.

“You said the boys were getting nicer.”

“They are.”

“Then why are we leaving?”

Marina stopped folding.

Because an adult had used children to trap her.

Because someone had searched her finances.

Because she had brought her own daughter close enough to be threatened.

All reasonable answers.

None belonged on an eight-year-old’s shoulders.

“I need to make sure this is a good place for us.”

Sofia considered that.

“Okay.”

There was no argument.

Somehow that hurt more.

Dante knocked on the open door.

He saw the suitcase and stayed outside.

“Can we talk?”

“In the hall.”

He nodded.

“I didn’t know she was involved.”

“I believe you.”

“That doesn’t sound like enough.”

“It isn’t.”

He accepted that without flinching.

Marina crossed her arms to stop her hands from shaking.

“You can put guards at every door.

You can’t ask me to raise my daughter inside a problem you haven’t faced.”

“I’m facing it.”

“Beatrice isn’t the only thing people are afraid of in this house.”

He looked toward the stairs.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he said, “I know.”

It was the first answer that made her feel less alone.

“The investigator is turning the records over to police,” he continued.

“And I’ve asked my attorney to start separating me from the people who made this place run on fear.”

“That won’t happen because you say it nicely.”

“No.

It’ll be ugly.”

“And expensive.”

“Yes.”

“Do it because your sons need a father they can ask questions.

Not because you want me to unpack.”

He nodded.

Marina took Sofia home for two nights.

She told the boys exactly when she would return.

Rafael asked three times.

Gabriel wrote it on the kitchen calendar.

Miguel asked whether she would call.

“At seven,” she said.

She called at six fifty-nine.

On the second evening, Dante sent a message.

No plea.

No expensive offer.

A photograph showed him on the nursery floor, assembling a crooked cardboard castle.

Under it he wrote:

I used too much tape.

Marina smiled.

Then another message arrived from an unknown number.

A photograph of her apartment building.
