Chapter 9 - THE TRUE HEIR

Claire’s documents arrived by secure courier the next morning.
Ethan gathered Amelia, Ramirez, Marcus, and two independent attorneys inside the hospital conference room.
Lily sat beside her mother drawing flowers.
The first document was Lily’s original birth certificate.
The second was Jonathan Blackwood’s trust amendment.
The attorneys read it twice.
Then a third time.
Finally, attorney Helen Mercer looked up.
“This changes everything.”
Ethan leaned back.
“How?”
“The trust copy held by Blackwood Group is incomplete.”
“Victor destroyed one page.”
She placed the original beside the corporate copy.
“The missing provision becomes active if any trustee deliberately attempts to harm a direct descendant.”
Amelia frowned.
“What does it do?”
Helen looked toward Lily.
“It permanently removes that trustee and every beneficiary acting in concert with them.”
Ethan understood.
“Victor loses everything.”
“Yes.”
“Voting rights.”
“Yes.”
“Trust distributions.”
“Yes.”
“Inheritance.”
“Yes.”
Helen paused.
“And his branch of the family loses future claims.”
The room became silent.
Victor had spent seven years committing crimes to seize an inheritance that his crimes automatically destroyed.
Marcus almost smiled.
“That’s poetic.”
Ethan did not.
Too many people had suffered for poetry.
“What happens to his shares?”
“They move into Lily’s protected trust.”
Amelia stared at the document.
“Lily becomes controlling beneficiary?”
Helen nodded.
“Once her identity is legally confirmed.”
Lily looked up from her drawing.
“What’s a beneficiary?”
Amelia smiled faintly.
“It means Grandpa left something for you.”
Lily looked worried.
“Do I have to go to meetings?”
Everyone laughed for the first time in what felt like days.
Ethan shook his head.
“Not for a long time.”
“Good.”
She returned to her flowers.
The DNA results arrived that afternoon.
Probability of biological paternity: 99.9998%.
Ethan read the line once.
Then again.
He had never needed the test.
But the world did.
Amelia’s maternity match was equally conclusive.
Lily Blackwood legally returned from the dead at 3:42 p.m.
News reached the press within an hour.
BLACKWOOD HEIRESS FOUND ALIVE SEVEN YEARS AFTER HOSPITAL FIRE.
BLACKWOOD CHAIRMAN’S WIFE ALSO RESCUED.
UNCLE INVESTIGATED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER PLOT.
Reporters surrounded corporate headquarters.
Television helicopters circled Blackwood Manor.
Ethan issued only one statement.
“My wife and daughter are alive.”
“Our family is cooperating fully with law enforcement.”
“We ask for privacy while Amelia recovers and Lily begins the childhood she was denied.”
He refused every interview.
Inside the manor, Lily walked through the main entrance holding Amelia’s hand.
She had lived in that house for two years through the servants’ door.
This time, Ethan opened the front doors himself.
Lily stopped beneath the chandelier.
“Am I allowed upstairs?”
Ethan looked at her.
“You’re allowed anywhere.”
“Even the library?”
“Especially the library.”
She smiled.
Then her smile faded when she saw Nora being escorted through the foyer by detectives.
Nora had returned to assist investigators searching the servants’ wing.
Lily stood very still.
Nora stopped.
For a long moment, they looked at each other.
Nora whispered, “I am so sorry.”
Lily moved closer to Amelia.
Nora’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know that doesn’t fix anything.”
Lily said nothing.
Ethan did not push her.
Forgiveness was not a debt a child owed an adult.
Nora turned away.
Then Lily spoke.
“Aunt Nora.”
Nora stopped.
“Did Uncle Victor take your boy too?”
Nora’s face collapsed.
“Yes.”
“Did you ever find him?”
“No.”
Lily looked at Ethan.
“Can we?”
Ethan understood.
Even after everything, his daughter wanted truth more than revenge.
He looked at Nora.
“What was his name?”
“Daniel Bell.”
Marcus began searching immediately.
Within six hours, they found something.
Daniel Bell had not disappeared.
May you like
He had been living under another identity.
And for the last five years, he had been employed by Victor Blackwood.
