Chapter 4 - MOTHER AND DAUGHTER

Lily stopped outside Amelia’s hospital room.

Ethan stood beside her.

She had changed from her yellow pajamas into a simple blue dress.

The silver locket rested around her neck again.

Her hand disappeared inside Ethan’s.

“Is she really my mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know me?”

Ethan’s throat tightened.

“She has known you every day of your life.”

Lily looked confused.

“But she wasn’t there.”

“She wanted to be.”

That was all Ethan could say without breaking.

Inside the room, Amelia sat propped against pillows.

The moment she saw Lily, her hand flew to her mouth.

Lily froze.

Amelia began crying silently.

For seven years, she had watched stolen photographs.

Grainy surveillance videos.

A toddler sleeping in a strange apartment.

A four-year-old playing alone in a courtyard.

A six-year-old reading beside a window.

Victor had used every image as a weapon.

Now Lily was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Real.

Amelia whispered, “My baby.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

He squeezed her hand.

She took one step.

Then another.

Amelia did not reach for her.

She seemed to understand that Lily had spent years learning to fear adults who reached too quickly.

So Amelia simply opened her arms.

Lily stared at her.

Then she ran.

Amelia caught her.

The sound Amelia made was part sob, part laugh.

Lily buried her face against her mother’s shoulder.

“I thought you forgot me.”

“No.”

Amelia kissed her hair.

“Never.”

“Aunt Nora said you were sick because I was bad.”

Ethan turned away for a moment.

Amelia held Lily tighter.

“You listen to me.”

“You were never bad.”

“Not once.”

“None of this happened because of you.”

Lily began crying.

Amelia cried with her.

Ethan had imagined this reunion in the abstract since discovering the truth.

Nothing had prepared him for seeing seven years of stolen love trying to repair itself in a hospital bed.

After several minutes, Lily looked at Amelia’s scars.

“Did the dark-room people hurt you?”

Amelia paused.

“Yes.”

Lily’s face changed.

“Uncle Victor?”

Ethan looked at her sharply.

“You called him Uncle Victor?”

Lily nodded.

“He visited sometimes.”

“What did he say to you?”

“He said you were dangerous.”

Amelia stiffened.

Lily looked at Ethan.

“He said if I ever told you who I was, you would send me away.”

Ethan knelt.

“Lily.”

She looked at him.

“I will never send you away.”

“Even if I make mistakes?”

“Especially then.”

“Even if I spill tea?”

Despite everything, Amelia laughed softly.

Ethan smiled.

“Especially if you spill tea.”

Lily studied him.

Then she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Ethan froze for half a heartbeat.

Then he held his daughter.

Seven years disappeared.

Not really.

The birthdays were still gone.

The first steps were gone.

The first words were gone.

But this moment was not.

And Victor would never take another one.

The door opened.

Marcus entered.

“We found Nora’s second phone.”

Ethan released Lily carefully.

“What’s on it?”

“Messages.”

“To Victor?”

“And three board members.”

Amelia’s face tightened.

Marcus placed printed screenshots on the table.

The names were devastating.

Richard Sloan, Blackwood Group’s general counsel.

Margaret Voss, head of the trust committee.

And Peter Crane, the company’s chief financial officer.

All three had known Ethan was being targeted.

All three had discussed the board vote.

One message from Sloan read:

ONCE E.B. IS CONFIRMED DECEASED, FILE THE PETITION BEFORE 8 A.M.

Another from Voss read:

THE CHILD MUST NEVER ENTER THE BOARDROOM.

And then Ethan saw Peter Crane’s message.

IF THE WIFE WAKES, MOVE HER BEFORE THE VOTE.

Ethan looked at Amelia.

“This wasn’t one man.”

“No.”

“It was a network.”

Marcus nodded.

“And they’re all coming to the board meeting.”

Ethan checked the time.

7:02 a.m.

“Good.”

Lily grabbed his hand.

“Are you going?”

“Yes.”

“Is Uncle Victor going to be there?”

“He thinks he is.”

Lily hesitated.

“Can I come?”

Amelia immediately said, “No.”

Lily looked down.

Ethan understood both of them.

He crouched.

“Why do you want to come?”

Lily touched the locket.

“Because they said I wasn’t real.”

The room went silent.

Lily looked toward Amelia.

“I want them to see me.”

Ethan felt something powerful settle in his chest.

Not rage.

Pride.

He looked at Amelia.

She was afraid.

But after a moment, she nodded.

“Only if she stays beside you.”

“She will.”

Lily lifted her chin.

May you like

For seven years, grown adults had built a billion-dollar conspiracy around erasing one little girl.

At nine o’clock that morning, Lily Blackwood was going to walk straight through its front door.
