Chapter 13 - THE BLACKWOOD CELLAR

Victor entered through a steel door.

He was no longer handcuffed.

Blood marked one sleeve.

Two armed men followed him.

Marcus moved instinctively in front of Lily.

Victor smiled.

“Still pretending to be honorable?”

Marcus said nothing.

Victor looked at Ethan.

“The document.”

Ethan held the trust amendment.

“Rachel first.”

Victor laughed.

“You’re negotiating?”

“Yes.”

Victor stepped closer.

“You spent seven years grieving instead of learning.”

“Learning what?”

“That family is leverage.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

“No.”

“Family is the reason you’re going to lose.”

Victor’s smile hardened.

He pressed a button.

A second steel door opened.

Rachel Reed was pushed into the room.

She looked exhausted.

But alive.

Marcus broke.

“Rachel.”

She stared at him.

“Marcus?”

Victor watched them with satisfaction.

“Beautiful.”

Marcus started forward.

One of Victor’s men raised a gun.

Ethan lifted the document.

“Stop.”

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked at Victor.

“You want this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“You know why.”

“No.”

“You’ve already been removed from the trust.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Ethan continued.

“The disqualification clause activates when a trustee harms a direct descendant.”

“You poisoned me.”

“You imprisoned Amelia.”

“You targeted Lily.”

“You lose everything even if you burn this.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“The corporate copy doesn’t contain that clause.”

“The court now has a certified copy.”

Victor stared at him.

Ethan almost saw the moment he understood.

The document in Ethan’s hand no longer mattered.

Victor had built this final trap for nothing.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Victor turned toward Lily.

Then Amelia’s voice suddenly sounded from Ethan’s phone.

“Victor.”

He looked toward the device.

Ethan had opened a live connection.

Amelia appeared on screen from Blackwood Manor.

Victor’s face twisted.

“You should have died.”

Amelia looked at him calmly.

“You said that seven years ago.”

Victor took one step toward Ethan.

“You think this ends with prison?”

Ethan said, “No.”

“It ends with everyone knowing exactly what you are.”

Victor reached for Lily.

Marcus moved first.

He struck Victor’s arm away.

One of Victor’s men raised his weapon.

A gunshot thundered.

Lily screamed.

Ethan pulled her to the floor.

For one terrible second, he thought Marcus had been hit.

Then Victor’s guard collapsed with a wound in his shoulder.

Detective Ramirez appeared at the tunnel entrance.

“State police!”

The cellar erupted.

Victor’s second man dropped his weapon.

Marcus grabbed Rachel and pulled her behind a stone pillar.

Ethan covered Lily with his body.

Victor ran toward the steel door.

Ramirez shouted.

“Stop!”

Victor ignored her.

He disappeared down a lower corridor.

Ethan looked at Marcus.

“Stay with Lily.”

Then he ran after his uncle.

“Ethan!” Ramirez yelled.

But Ethan had already entered the darkness.

The corridor led beneath the old mansion.

Victor stumbled ahead.

“You never knew when to let go!” he shouted.

Ethan followed.

“You murdered my father!”

“You stole my wife!”

“You terrorized my daughter!”

“You don’t get to talk about letting go!”

Victor reached an underground garage.

An old vehicle waited with keys inside.

He opened the driver’s door.

Ethan caught him.

They crashed against the concrete floor.

Victor punched wildly.

Ethan blocked him.

Seven years of grief stood between them.

But Ethan did not kill him.

That surprised Victor.

“You’re weak,” Victor spat.

Ethan pinned him.

“No.”

“I’m done becoming you.”

Ramirez arrived with officers.

They pulled Victor up.

He was bleeding from the mouth.

He laughed anyway.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“You think Lily will thank you for this empire?”

Ethan stood.

“She doesn’t need an empire.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“She needs parents.”

Officers dragged him away.

When Ethan returned to the cellar, Lily ran into his arms.

“Daddy.”

Ethan held her.

Across the room, Marcus held Rachel.

For the first time, every hostage Victor had used as leverage was free.

But one final battle remained.

The criminal case would be public.

Every secret would be exposed.

And Lily would have to decide whether she wanted the world to know the story adults had written over her childhood.
