Chapter 4 - The Missing Footage

A police officer came to document Valeria’s account. She described Esther confronting her on the back landing, demanding her signature, then shoving her when she tried to walk away.
“Was anyone else there?” the officer asked.
“Gabriel appeared at the bottom of the stairs after I fell.”
“Did he help you?”
“He started toward me. Esther stopped him.”
Alejandro listened without interrupting. Each detail showed him a piece of the days he had spent downstairs, trusting that his family would tell him if Valeria needed help.
After the officer left, he called Owen Pike, the mansion’s security manager.
“I need the back staircase footage from four nights ago.”
“That camera was down,” Owen said.
“When?”
“It was scheduled for replacement.”
“Send me the maintenance order.”
Owen hesitated. “I’ll find it.”
Alejandro ended the call and contacted Marisol Vega, his assistant at Aranda Holdings. She had worked with him for seven years and knew where the company stored every legal record.
“Find any document with my signature that names Esther guardian of our child,” he said.
“Is Valeria okay?”
“She’s at the hospital.”
“I’ll look right now.”
Daniel returned to the room. Valeria had asked him to stay, though Alejandro saw that trust between them was strained by whatever Daniel had kept from her.
“Esther had your phone,” Daniel told Alejandro.
Alejandro looked at Valeria.
“She took it after the fall,” Valeria said. “She told the staff I needed rest and no calls.”
“Why didn’t you use mine?”
“I tried to get into your study. It was locked. I borrowed a phone from the laundry room to call Daniel.”
Alejandro thought of the two nights he had come home late and passed her closed bedroom door. Esther had told him Valeria wanted to be alone.
Marisol called an hour later.
“I found a notice Esther filed with the family trust administrator yesterday,” she said. “It says your child is at risk if you and Valeria remain the legal guardians.”
“She filed it before the baby was born?”
“Yes.”
“Why would the trust administrator care?”

Marisol went quiet.
“Alejandro, you need to read the trust agreement again. Especially the clause about an unfit parent.”
